Key Takeaways
- Donkey Kong Land 3 has been added to Nintendo Switch Online.
- The service only received the 1997 Game Boy original rather than the updated 2000 version for the Game Boy Color.
- The entire Donkey Kong Land trilogy is now available on Nintendo Switch Online.
As a seasoned gamer who has traversed through countless generations of gaming consoles, I must say that the addition of Donkey Kong Land 3 to Nintendo Switch Online is a delightful trip down memory lane. The trilogy’s completion on this platform brings back memories of my childhood when I used to huddle around the Game Boy screen, determined to save Diddy Kong from the clutches of King K. Rool.
The Nintendo Switch Online service has incorporated “Donkey Kong Land 3”. This Game Boy vintage game, celebrated its 27th birthday in October 2024, now expands the collection of “Donkey Kong Land” games available on Nintendo Switch Online.
As a gamer reminiscing about my childhood, I’d say the Donkey Kong Land series, which I adore, is composed of three games that Rare created back in their pre-Microsoft days. These titles were rolled out one by one each year, starting from 1995 and ending in 1997. The very first Donkey Kong Land game joined the Nintendo Switch Online library on November 22, and its direct successor followed suit four days later, both taking me back to those golden gaming days.
On Wednesday, December 4th, Donkey Kong Land 3 joined the ranks of other classic Game Boy games on Nintendo Switch Online. This new addition is accessible through both tiers of the subscription service. It’s important to note that it’s different from Donkey Kong Country 3, which was originally exclusive to the SNES and became available on Nintendo Switch Online back in December 2020.
NSO Didn’t Get the Best Version of Donkey Kong Land 3
One caveat with this release is that Nintendo Switch Online members didn’t get access to the best version of Donkey Kong Land 3, which would be its Game Boy Color port from 2000. Instead, the NSO library received the original Game Boy version from 1997, which uses a monochrome palette rather than vibrant color visuals. This is presumably because the GBC port was never released outside of Japan, so bringing it to the West now would require localization. Nintendo does occasionally localize classics, like when it brought F-Zero: GP Legend and F-Zero Climax to NSO back in October 2024, but it does so infrequently.
Nintendo Isn’t Done With Bringing Donkey Kong Games to the Switch
The appearance of DKL3 adds even more credibility to the Switch’s standing as a top-tier Donkey Kong gaming system. Currently, Nintendo Switch Online grants users access to ten games from the extensive franchise, spanning from Donkey Kong Country and DK3 to Donkey Kong Jr. and DK Jr. Math. The Switch has also received ports of DKC: Tropical Freeze in May 2018 and a remake of Mario vs. Donkey Kong in February 2024, while Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is scheduled for release on the hybrid console on January 16, 2025.
In December 2024, Donkey Kong Land 3 will be the initial new title added to the NSO library, but it won’t be the only one. Additionally, the NES version of Tetris is planned to join the Nintendo Switch Online service, set to premiere on Thursday, December 12. This could potentially be the last addition to the NSO content catalog for 2024.
