Nintendo Switch Online GBA Games Make Mother 3 Western Release More Likely

Highlights

  • Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack continues to add value with M-rated games and former Japan-exclusive titles for Western subscribers.
  • The release of Starfy trilogy on NSO hints at the possibility of a Mother 3 localization for Western audiences in the future.
  • Despite hurdles like English localization, the trend of Japan-only releases on NSO gives hope for a potential Mother 3 Western release.

Nintendo Switch Online has evolved into an excellent platform for gamers to access Nintendo’s esteemed collection of classic games. Despite some debate over its subscription service and cost, Nintendo has consistently added value through its Expansion Pack, which includes N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy Advance titles. Most recently, Nintendo granted Western subscribers access to a trio of formerly exclusive Japanese games, fueling anticipation for the long-awaited localization of fan-favorite “Mother 3.”

As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled about the ongoing value enhancement of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack tier. Recently, during the latest Nintendo Direct, we were treated to an exciting new lineup of M-rated games. Adding to this, three previously unreleased in the west Densetsu no Starfy games from the Gameboy Advance era have been added to the service. Being able to play these games, which never left Japan’s shores before, is a significant accomplishment worth cheering about. This trend of bringing former Japan-only releases to the global audience on Nintendo Switch Online has been a game-changer, and it’d be fantastic if Mother 3 could join this movement too.

The Starfy Trilogy Releasing on Nintendo Switch Online is a Good Sign for a Western Mother 3 Release

In contrast to the West, which gained access to the fifth installment of the Starfy series, “The Legendary Starfy,” on Nintendo DS in 2008, this is the sole game from the franchise released globally. Previously, four earlier games – “Densestu no Starfy,” “Densestu no Starfy 2,” and “Densestu no Starfy 3” – had remained unavailable outside Japan. With these titles now accessible on Nintendo Switch Online, international audiences can discover these previously unexplored treasures. These releases are undeniably thrilling, but they may also offer a glimmer of hope for the long-awaited localization of “Mother 3,” a demand that has persisted among fans.

Among all the installments of “Densetsu no Starfy” (Story of Starfy), only the one following these NSO updates hasn’t been made available to audiences outside of Japan.

With the announcement that Game Boy Advance games would be added to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack library, there was renewed excitement among fans hoping for a Western release of Mother 3. This new service presented an ideal opportunity for Nintendo to make this long-awaited game available to a wider audience. The fact that other previously unreleased GBA titles are now accessible on the platform strengthens the case, making the release of Mother 3 more likely than ever before. Currently, the game is only playable for subscribers in Japan via the Nintendo Switch Online service there.

Mother 3 May Still Face Some Hurdles with a Localized Release

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always been intrigued by the Starfy and Mother series, but unfortunately, they never quite gained the same level of popularity in the Western gaming community as they did in Japan. I believe one reason for this is the fear held by Nintendo of America that these games might not connect with non-Japanese audiences. The same apprehension arises when discussing the prospect of releasing Mother 3, a game known for its unique themes and portrayal of characters like the Magypsies.

An obstacle remains for the game to have a Western version: a complete English translation. The Starfy games on Nintendo Switch Online are currently in Japanese, which isn’t problematic for most players since they’re platformers with minimal text. However, a role-playing game like Mother 3 heavily relies on text and would necessitate a localization effort to reach Western audiences.
