Nintendo Switch Online Officially Adds 3 Certified Classic Games

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers now have three more classic NES games to enjoy! The update includes the famous Pac-Man and a lesser-known title from Game Freak. These games are available now through the Nintendo Classics NES app on Switch, and are free to download and play for anyone with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Nintendo Switch Online isn’t limited to just classic NES games. It includes titles from other systems too, like GameCube. The latest addition with the Expansion Pack was Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness in March. It’s worth noting that Gale of Darkness was made by Genius Sonority, not the usual Pokemon developer, Game Freak. In fact, the game Game Freak added for April isn’t even a Pokemon title.

New NSO Additions for April 2026 (Available Now)

  • Pac-Man
  • Mendel Palace
  • The Tower of Druaga

Almost everyone knows Pac-Man – it’s the classic game where you navigate a maze, eat dots, and chase ghosts! The original game came out in 1980, and it was later released for the NES, one of many different systems it’s been available on. Interestingly, all of these games first came out during the 1980s.

While not as famous as Pac-Man, Mendel Palace and The Tower of Druaga are classic NES games worth exploring. Interestingly, Mendel Palace was the very first game created by Game Freak, the company that would later become known for the Pokémon series. The game follows Bon-Bon as she tries to rescue her friend Candy from a nightmare. Players must solve puzzles, defeat mischievous dolls, and manipulate the environment to advance.

The game The Tower of Druaga is notable for being among the first to build a fanbase through hidden secrets and items. It also pioneered many features common in later action games, serving as inspiration for titles like Ys, Hydlide, Dragon Slayer, and The Legend of Zelda. Importantly, it helped create the idea of game guides and communities where players shared information – something new at the time. The game itself involves climbing the Tower of Druaga, finding a key on each floor to progress, and ultimately defeating the tower’s boss. Its replay value comes from discovering hidden items, such as a pickaxe, and secrets on each level, and its impact on the dungeon design of The Legend of Zelda is easily seen.

If you’re planning to play these classic NES games on Nintendo Switch Online, you’ll be happy to know they come with some helpful extras. These features are actually a hidden gem of the service! Being able to save your progress anywhere and even rewind gameplay makes older, trickier games much more enjoyable – especially if you struggle with challenging titles like The Tower of Druaga. Many consider The Tower of Druaga to be one of the most difficult games ever made.
