Nintendo Switch Online Welcomes 4 Classic Koei Tecmo SNES Games!

Summary

  • Four Koei Tecmo strategy games, including Nobunaga’s Ambition and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, added to SNES app for Nintendo Switch Online.
  • Players must unify Japan in Nobunaga’s Ambition and control rulers in Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4.
  • March 28 sees release of new games, including removal of Super Soccer; future game additions to Switch Online service remain unclear.

On March 20th, Nintendo announced that four strategy games from Koei Tecmo will be included in their SNES app for the Nintendo Switch Online service. This includes two games from the Nobunaga’s Ambition series, along with Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4: Wall of Fire and Uncharted Water: New Horizons.

Back in 1986, I found myself immersed in a historical simulation game called “Nobunaga’s Ambition,” initially available only on PCs. Later, it made its way to the SNES in 1993. This game drops you right into the heart of 16th-century Japan, following in the footsteps of military leader Oda Nobunaga as he seeks to conquer and unify the land, all while battling off rival forces eager to seize control. Over the years, there have been numerous sequels, with the latest being “Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening” in 2022. If you’re a Pokemon fan, you might recall that Koei Tecmo and The Pokemon Company collaborated to release “Pokemon Conquest” on the DS back in 2012.

Alongside the original “Nobunaga’s Ambition” game for the SNES, three more titles from Koei Tecmo will become playable on Nintendo Switch Online. These include “Nobunaga’s Ambition: Lord of Darkness”, “Uncharted Waters: New Horizons”, and “Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4: Wall of Fire”. The release date for these games is scheduled for March 28. Upon their launch, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will only need to download a minor update for the SNES app. Both “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” and “Nobunaga’s Ambition” series are classic strategy games, characterized by a more deliberate pace where players must strategically manage their armies, recruit soldiers, and rally peasants to their side.

Nintendo Switch Online Adds Classic Koei Tecmo Strategy Games

The game “Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4: Wall of Fire” lets you manage up to 38 leaders and various weapons such as catapults and battering rams to demolish enemy strongholds. On the other hand, “Uncharted Waters: New Horizons” is set on the ocean where you can choose from six distinct characters, each with their unique narratives.

Four Koei Tecmo strategy games are set to round off a bustling March for Nintendo Switch Online members, starting with “Donkey Kong” and “Mario’s Picross” on the Game Boy app on March 7th. However, on March 28th, subscribers will bid farewell to one SNES game, as “Super Soccer” will be taken off the service. Whether “Super Soccer” will reappear on Nintendo Switch Online in the future remains uncertain.

As the North American version of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4: Wall of Fire” game celebrates its 30th anniversary in July 2025, it seems fitting that it could be included among other Koei Tecmo classics. With the Nintendo Switch 2 expected soon, we’ll just have to wait and see which games Nintendo and their partners decide to add to future updates of the Switch Online service.
