Nintendo Switch Sells Over 146 Million Units

As a lifelong Nintendo enthusiast who grew up with the NES and has collected every subsequent console since, I must admit, I’m both awestruck and a little nostalgic as I see the Switch crossing yet another milestone. With numbers that put the Wii U, Wii, DS, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy, GameCube, Nintendo 64, SNES, and NES in the dust, it’s clear that the Switch is not just a game console – it’s a cultural phenomenon.

The Nintendo Switch has announced sales figures for its exclusive video game console, surpassing the 145 million unit milestone.

As per the latest financial update, Nintendo Switch has achieved a remarkable milestone by selling approximately 146 million hardware units and a staggering 1.3 billion software units worldwide. However, this report also indicates some challenges for Nintendo. Specifically, there was a 31% decrease in hardware sales (from 7.24 million to 4.72 million) and a 27.6% reduction in software sales (from 100.28 million to 70.28 million) compared to the same period last year.

Compared to other Nintendo systems, the Wii U has been sold approximately 13.56 million times, while the Wii has reached a staggering 101.63 million sales; the DS is leading with an impressive 154.02 million units sold, followed closely by the Game Boy Advance at 81.51 million. The original Game Boy has also been a popular choice among consumers, with 118.69 million units purchased. The GameCube trails slightly behind with 21.74 million units sold, while the Nintendo 64 managed to sell 32.93 million. The SNES comes in at 49.10 million units and the NES takes the lead with a massive 61.91 million units sold.

From May 2024 onwards, new Nintendo Switch games such as Paper Mario Thousand-Year Door, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom have collectively sold approximately 1.94 million, 1.57 million, and 2.58 million units respectively. Additionally, during the same period, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold an additional 2.31 million units, resulting in a total software sales figure of around 64.27 million units for Nintendo Switch.
