During a recent Nintendo Direct broadcast focusing on their upcoming console, the secret function of the Nintendo Switch 2’s C Button was unveiled at last. This button will initiate the Game Chat features for the Nintendo Switch 2, offering players an innovative method to converse with friends as they play Nintendo games together.
Ever since it was first announced, there’s been a lot of buzz about the Nintendo Direct presentation for the Nintendo Switch 2, where they promised to unveil details on system hardware specifications and new software coming out for the upcoming console. The event was packed with fascinating information, but the enigma surrounding the C Button has sparked intense speculation within the gaming community as we eagerly await its official clarification.
Towards the beginning of the presentation, the function of the Nintendo Switch 2’s C Button and its link to Game Chat was clarified. With a built-in microphone (available on both the console and Pro Controller), this new communication feature enables players to display their screens to each other in smaller windows, allowing them to chat while gaming at the same time. Remarkably, Game Chat works whether you’re using the Switch 2 in dock mode or handheld mode, and it doesn’t require both players to be playing the same game.
Nintendo Switch 2 C Button Controls Game Chat Feature

Starting from the Nintendo Switch console launch on June 5, 2025, until the end of March 2026, gamers can enjoy the Game Chat feature for free before requiring a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online. This means they’ll get a chance to experience the new chat function without any charges during this period.
Besides the C button, there are other novel inclusions to the Nintendo Switch 2’s Pro Controller, as revealed in the recent presentation. The GL and GR buttons have been added, offering players the opportunity to customize their control layout even further. They can reassign existing controls to the new back buttons on the controller, giving them more options beyond just thumb actions. Furthermore, the controller comes with an audio jack at its base. In addition to these updates, the Joy Cons are also equipped with advanced mouse-like controls, although the price for the new system was not disclosed during the presentation. However, it’s expected that the cost will be officially unveiled shortly.
