Information about a potential data leak was made public through legal filings in the U.S. District Court for Northern California (as reported by Polygon). Nintendo is seeking a court order that would require Discord to disclose the personal details of the user responsible for the leak. This includes names, emails, IP addresses, and additional information.
Discord has not made any public comments on this matter yet, however, their privacy policy indicates that they may be compelled to share information if a court orders them to do so.
The TeraLeak Was a Devastation
In October 2024, TeraLeak was the first to breach Discord, unveiling a trove of confidential developer materials, internal documents, and even details about Pokémon Legends: Z-A that hadn’t been publicly revealed yet. This leak included abandoned character designs, concept artwork, multiplayer prototypes, and worryingly, personal data related to Game Freak staff members.
However, this incident wasn’t merely an unimportant sharing of tales. Due to its extensive impact, it supposedly disclosed financial documents and confidential employee information. At this point, even the most dedicated leak enthusiasts within the community began expressing caution.
Nintendo consistently takes strong, public action against individuals who leak information, as demonstrated by the $150,000 fines given to two leakers of Sword and Shield guidebooks in 2019. It’s worth noting that Nintendo has previously sought legal action, such as subpoenaing Discord and 4chan, which suggests they are experienced in this area.
Although the present subpoena doesn’t necessarily mean legal action will occur immediately, it signals the opening of a game in progress. Previously, when Nintendo issued a subpoena to Discord, it ultimately led to lawsuits and settlements.
If the court grants the subpoena, Discord would be compelled by law to provide identifying details. This information could empower Nintendo to initiate a civil lawsuit. While jail time remains an improbable scenario, the possibility of legal action against Discord is very real.
