Nioh 3 Rarity Colors, Explained

Like many games in the Soulslike genre, Nioh 3 features a lot of loot. You’ll spend a good portion of your time collecting and sorting through hundreds of items. Similar to action RPGs like Diablo, the gear you find is randomized and comes in different rarities. Better, rarer items generally have more powerful stats, and equipping the best gear is key to making your character as strong as possible. Here’s a quick look at how the gear system works in Nioh 3*.

Nioh 3 Gear Rarity System, Explained

In Nioh 3, each item has a base stat and several extra stats that are randomly generated. Items with the same name will always share the same base stat, but their extra stats will be unique.

There are four rarity colors in Nioh 3, with an additional one that’s reserved for New Game Plus:

  1. White (Common)
  2. Yellow (Uncommon)
  3. Blue (Rare)
  4. Purple (Exotic)
  5. Divine (Green; NG+ only)

Item enhancements, called affixes, also come in different rarities, similar to the levels we discussed earlier. However, green affixes usually indicate items that are part of a set or have a special, unique ability. Importantly, how rare an affix is doesn’t depend on how rare the item itself is.

What’s the Difference?

The main difference between item rarities is how many special properties, called affixes, they have. Common (white) items have just one affix, while blue and yellow items have two. Purple items have three. The rarest items, Divine gear, have four affixes, and one of those is a unique bonus from the Divine Grace set.

To maximize your combat effectiveness in Nioh 3, it’s best to equip a complete set of purple gear. However, just because an item is rarer doesn’t automatically mean it will increase your damage output or ability to survive. The specific stats an item has are very important, particularly if you’re aiming for a certain playstyle.

To make your equipment more powerful, visit the Blacksmith in the Eternal Rift and use the Soul Match feature. This allows you to either raise the item’s level or improve its enhancement level (the plus sign value). Both methods boost your gear’s stats, but the enhancement option is only for Exotic-quality items.

What to Do With Your Gear in Nioh 3?

You can choose between four options when choosing to dispose of your excess gear:

  • Sold for Gold
  • Disassembled for crafting materials
  • Used for Soul Extraction to get Soul Match materials
  • Offered for Amrita

Only hold onto equipment you actually plan to use. Don’t stress over small differences in stats, because you can always improve weapons to keep them useful throughout the game. If you come across a weapon or armor with exactly the qualities you want, it’s worth saving and upgrading when you have the resources.
