Good news for Xbox fans! Nioh 3, the popular samurai action game, might be coming to Xbox before the end of the year. While initially a PlayStation 5 exclusive, Koei Tecmo has announced it won’t be for long, meaning Xbox players will soon be able to experience the third installment in this beloved series. Fans of the first two Nioh games have been eagerly awaiting this announcement.
During the June 2025 State of Play, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja announced Nioh 3, showcasing a new combat style and a free demo that players could try on PlayStation 5. The full game will launch on both PS5 and PC, following a recent trend for Sony games. Fans have now spotted a small detail suggesting Nioh 3 won’t be exclusive to PlayStation consoles for very long.
Nioh 3 Is Only a PS5 Console Exclusive for 6 Months
A recent PlayStation trailer highlighted features for Nioh 3 on PS5, but surprisingly revealed the game won’t be a PS5 exclusive throughout 2026. While the trailer initially advertises the game as exclusive to PlayStation 5, a small asterisk indicates otherwise. The details explain that Nioh 3 will also be available on PC, and won’t be available on other consoles – like Xbox or potentially the new Switch – for at least six months after its launch. This means PlayStation players will get to play the game first, and a demo is available now. However, players on other platforms could potentially access the game as early as Fall 2026.
While not entirely unexpected, given that both Xbox and PlayStation have been sharing more games lately, the announcement is good news for fans. Many consider Nioh 2 to be one of the best games in the ‘Souls-like’ genre, and previously, the first two Nioh games were only playable on PlayStation. It’s unclear if the original Nioh games will also be released on other consoles after Nioh 3, but the fact that the newest game might lose its PlayStation exclusivity is a promising development.
Image via Team Ninja The recent Nioh 3 trailer for PS5 doesn’t say if the game will be released on other consoles, but the Xbox Series X and S are the most probable options. Nintendo hasn’t shown the same interest as Sony and Microsoft in releasing games on multiple platforms, and the Switch 2’s different hardware often makes it difficult to achieve the same performance as on other consoles. Because of this, major games typically appear on Nintendo less often. However, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is planned for both the Switch 2 and Xbox, showing that large PS5 titles can come to Nintendo’s console.
While there’s no confirmed release date for Nioh 3 on Xbox or other platforms, its limited initial exclusivity suggests Team Ninja plans to expand its availability relatively soon. Other games have stayed exclusive to PlayStation for much longer – Phantom Blade Zero, for example, will be a PS5 exclusive for a full year – which makes this news encouraging. We’ll need to wait for an official announcement from Koei Tecmo, but it seems the wait might not be very long.
