Spoilers for the Season 3 finale of Yellowjackets below
Actress Sophie Nélisse, who plays a key role in the series “Yellowjackets”, has spoken about the gripping final scene of Season 3 that left her convinced there is more darkness ahead for her character. Intriguingly, she hinted at some chilling developments to come in Season 4.
In Season 3 of “Yellowjackets”, some significant disclosures were made. However, the most striking one was when young Shauna (portrayed by Nélisse) was chosen as the Antler Queen. Meanwhile, adult Shauna (depicted by Melanie Lynskey) lowers her defenses and experiences emotions she’s longed to feel. These instances are crucial to the plot and highlight Shauna’s true character, suggesting she might be a formidable figure. While viewers may perceive the darkness within her negatively, for Nélisse, it represents a different aspect, and she feels that the darkness enveloping her character is only intensifying.
‘No societal rules for her when she’s in the wilderness’ teases Yellowjackets star
As a passionate film enthusiast, I had an engaging conversation with Variety about my character in ‘Yellowjackets’. I shared that the dark side of Shauna isn’t a label I shy away from; instead, it feels validating when viewers call her villainous. The darkness within me is authentic, and while it’s often perceived as negative, I don’t understand why. It’s not that she’s misusing it intentionally, but rather because she lacks the support system to express it healthily due to her circumstances.
On a different note, when Shauna is in the wilderness, I feel an overwhelming sense of liberation and strength. The absence of societal norms and parental guidance allows that darkness within me to flourish without any boundaries or limitations.
In the wake of the last episode of Season 3 of Yellowjackets, it’s revealed that young Shauna transformed into the Antler Queen, a symbol of supreme power and descent into primal nature. This character has been subtly hinted at since the series began, causing intrigue among viewers. The Antler Queen, a crucial figure in the show, appears frequently in visions. It took three entire seasons for the series to unveil the Antler Queen’s true identity, leaving fans astonished and questioning Shauna’s capacity for terror. Furthermore, when adult Shauna learns that her husband and daughter have abandoned her, it suggests she is now liberated from societal expectations, allowing her to embrace her true self. In the closing scenes of Season 3, an empty house greets adult Shauna, with a torn note from the DAT tape being the only remnant. Enraged, she tears up the note and pens in her journal about reclaiming her power. She wrote, “I was not just a wife or mother back then. I was a warrior. I was a fng queen.
The final episode of the third season of Yellowjackets lays the groundwork for a more ominous fourth season. It’s now known that young Shauna is the Antler Queen, suggesting a deeper slide into brutality and power struggles in the wilderness. Furthermore, Hannah’s phone call for rescue could prove to be a critical turning point for the group, potentially marking their return to civilization. As each character grapples with their personal demons, it’s evident that there may be even more hardships to come. With the show being renewed, season 4 is expected to delve into the lengths they’ll go to survive and the price they’ll pay for it.
All three seasons of Yellowjackets are available for streaming on Showtime.
