No Man’s Sky: How to Get Cadmium

As an experienced space explorer with countless hours logged in No Man’s Sky under my belt, let me share some valuable insights about that elusive resource – Cadmium.

In the expansive universe of No Man’s Sky, certain valuable elements like Cadmium are hidden in remote systems that aren’t immediately accessible. If you find yourself scratching your head on where to obtain this resource early in the game, here’s a hint: Keep exploring and don’t forget to scour nearby planets for hidden caches!

In this article, we will walk you through all the essential details about Cadmium found in No Man’s Sky, covering where to find it and its various uses.

How to Get Cadmium in No Man’s Sky

Cadmium only appears in red star systems that look like red dots on the Galaxy Map. You must install a Cadmium Drive on your starship to travel to one of these systems. It’s an upgrade to the hyperdrive that you can pick up on the Anomaly at the starship upgrade NPC. Cadmium Drive requires 250 Chromatic Metal and 3 Wiring Looms to build.

In simple terms, there aren’t any space stations in red-star systems. So, traveling there and back requires using a hyperdrive, unless you opt to establish a base or utilize your freighter with the Amplified Warp Shielding upgrade. Consequently, you won’t find vendors or services that are typically available on space stations.

With the Cadmium Drive activated, consult the Galaxy Map and jump to the closest red-colored star system. Upon arrival, scan the planets within this system using your spacecraft’s scanning device, as it’s possible that not all planets here hold Cadmium resources.

Touch down on the alien world, locate the Cadmium reserve, then employ the Terrain Modifier for extraction. Another option is to set up an Automated Mining Facility above the Cadmium deposit. In this scenario, it would be wise to establish a base camp with a teleporter on the planet, ensuring swift and convenient travel to the Cadmium site.

What is Cadmium used for in No Man’s Sky?

In No Man’s Sky, Cadmium serves a limited number of purposes. Primarily, it is utilized for enhancing the Emeril Drive upgrade on your spaceship’s hyperdrive and the Amplified Warp Shielding upgrade for your freighter’s hyperdrive. These enhancements enable you to jump into star systems marked green, where Emeril can be discovered.

Another use for Cadmium is to craft an AtlasPass v2 card to access restricted areas on space stations and outposts. If you want to craft AtlasPass v3 to access even more areas, you need the previously mentioned Emeril, too.

In the game No Man’s Sky, you’ll find that Cadmium is essential for multiple key missions such as The First Traveller mission and a part of The Atlas Path mission. Any excess Cadmium can be transformed into Chromatic Metal, a material that’s commonly utilized in research and construction endeavors.
