As a seasoned player of Norland, I can’t help but share my wisdom with those eager to delve into this captivating world of strategy and warfare. Having spent countless hours building my thriving village, raising formidable armies, and waging battles against fierce enemies, I am more than qualified to guide you through the intricacies of this game.
In the medieval colony simulation game called Norland, your objective is to rebuild the fallen empire. Consequently, war plays a significant role. Yet, there are alternative methods for gaining power and influence. Initially, it may be unclear to players how to wage war against adversaries, be they marauding bandits or hostile neighboring settlements.
In the less-than-serious world of Norland, soldiers don’t magically appear, so players need to invest time and resources into creating their military force. They can construct barracks, recruit peasants, or hire mercenaries, and optionally, train their warriors for battle. To go to war, smaller units must be organized with lords leading the charge, and weapons distributed accordingly. Players need to learn how to dispatch their squads and command them during battles. This guide will walk you through the process.
How To Form An Army In Norland
In Norland, the initial action to establish an army begins with erecting living quarters, referred to as Barracks, for your soldiers. This structure is accessible right from the start and is advisable to construct once you have the fundamentals of your settlement in place. Each Barracks can accommodate up to 10 warriors. Therefore, if your military ambitions extend beyond this number, additional Barracks will need to be set up accordingly.
After building a Barracks, players can access the army selection by clicking the bottom screen’s crossed swords icon. Below the lineup of lords who can act as commanders, there is a warrior section. By clicking the grey rectangle with a plus sign within it, players will be able to open a new menu for including more warriors in their army.
As a seasoned commander with years of experience leading my troops into battle, I can tell you that building a strong army is no easy task. This menu presents two options for recruiting fighters to strengthen my ranks.
Maintaining a military presence in Norland, even without offensive intentions, remains beneficial. Soldiers can safeguard the community by patrolling and deterring criminal activities. Erecting patrol banners for enhanced security is also advisable.
Based on my own gaming experiences, I’ve come to realize that managing your economy wisely is crucial in this game, especially when it comes to hiring and training soldiers. The church imposes a tax based on the combat level of your warriors, so appointing too many high-level soldiers at once can put a heavy strain on your resources.
Purchasing Or Crafting Weapons & Armor In Norland
In the initial stages, it’s essential for players to acquire weapons and armor; without them, even skilled warriors would be largely ineffective. Basically, they’ll have no choice but to engage in combat using only their bare fists. To get started, players can primarily rely on the Holy Caravan for purchases. They can initially buy fundamental items like spears, bows, and possibly light armor. However, advanced equipment will become accessible once a stronger bond with the Matriarch is formed. Players should also check the map to identify any neighboring regions exporting weapons or armor.
In Norland, creating weapons and armor is a complex process that demands extensive knowledge and careful attention. Before you can start building advanced structures for this purpose, it’s essential to gain the necessary expertise in your workshop first. This prerequisite assumes that players have previously learned the basics of mining. Here’s an overview of the production buildings involved in crafting weapons and armor:
Building | Produces | Knowledge |
---|---|---|
Workshop | Tools, Daggers, Bows | Mine, Workshop |
Coal Furnace | Coal | Mine, Coal Furnace |
Armor Forge | Shields, Light Armor, Heavy Armor | Workshop, Armor Forge |
Weapon Forge | Maces, Spears, Axes, Swords | Workshop Weapon Forge |
Players should keep in mind that mastering Heavy Armor, Swords, and Axes calls for additional learning. Each of these categories comes with specific instruction manuals that can be discovered. At a certain stage in the game, when iron supplies from mines are depleted, players might have to construct a Smelting Furnace if they plan on continuing to produce weapons and armor.
Training Warriors In Norland
In Norland, leading an elite army comes with the requirement of training your soldiers first. However, this feature isn’t accessible right from the beginning of the game; instead, it calls for some initial advancement and acquired knowledge. Fret not, as it becomes less challenging once you’ve made some headway:
- After reaching 30 population, purchase the Training Ground book from the Holy Caravan.
- Assign a lord, ideally with high Intelligence, to study the book in the Library.
- Once this knowledge has been acquired, construct a Training Ground near the Barracks.
- Assign a manager to the Training Ground with a high Combat & Commander rating, and then warriors will begin training.
At this training facility, warriors can expect their Combat ability to develop without any additional tax cost. This makes it an economically wise decision to enlist low-Combat peasants and train them for your army. However, keep in mind that each Training Ground can only house ten warriors at a time. So, as your military expands, you’ll need to construct another training ground. Furthermore, this building necessitates daily supervision, so if the managing lord is absent, no training sessions will be conducted.
How To Form A Squad In Norland
If players have prepared and readied an army for battle, and they hold just cause to engage in one, be it as straightforward as eliminating bandits, they must create a squad. This can be accomplished on the army menu’s right side, where you will find a gray box with a plus symbol labeled “Army”.
Starting at this point, players can select which ruler they prefer to command their troops. Typically, the one with the greatest Command ability (indicated by the flag) is the most desirable choice. Nevertheless, keep in mind that this leader could meet his demise or sustain severe injuries during battle.
Hiring knights from the mercenary roster, who have the ability to command squads, is a suitable choice for individuals preferring to minimize the risk of losing their lords in battle.
In the squad selection screen that appears next, players should place warriors in their desired squad by choosing them from the list on the left. The soldiers will then transfer from the left side to the right squad. Remember, it’s crucial for players not to overlook assigning weapons and armor to each soldier within the squad. A minimum of one weapon per soldier is required, and if any warriors can wear armor into battle, they should be equipped accordingly.
When it comes to choosing warriors for battle, the Combat skill is undeniably crucial. However, players should not disregard the current emotional state of their soldiers, indicated by green, yellow, or red backgrounds. A soldier’s morale significantly influences their fighting ability in combat. Furthermore, players could consider dividing their forces into two squads to enable them to bring along two highly skilled lords onto the battlefield.
After selecting their warriors and equipment, players can easily click the “Create Squad” button below, then sit back and watch as their team gathers their gear and arranges in formation.
How To Send An Army To War In Norland
Once their troops are prepared, players can press the map to dispatch their army towards the foe. They may opt for objectives such as bandit camps or adversarial cities. For cities that aren’t currently at war, players must issue an ultimatum using the action button if they wish to attack. In diplomacy, select an ultimatum like “Offer Vassalage,” “Threat of Plunder,” or “Burning to the Ground.” If the proposal is rejected following delivery, the city will then be marked as a war target.
Once you’ve clicked on your chosen target, go ahead and press the “Action” button to bring up the menu. Look for the “Attack” option and give it a tap. Next, hit the “On Local Map” button. Here, players can either pick a squad by checking its box or create a new one from scratch. Don’t forget that you must choose at least one squad before pressing the “Send Army” button, otherwise your army won’t move and you might be left questioning if it’s on its way or not. You can also combine two or more squads into a single army for improved outcomes and enhanced command possibilities.
With accurate execution, gamers have the ability to return to their village perspective and observe their team advancing toward the border of the screen. After that, they can bring up the map once more and notice the squad’s commander carrying a banner as they approach their objective with a leisurely pace.
Battles In Norland
After an army has arrived at its intended location on the map, a notable representation of two overlapping swords will emerge above the opposing military forces as a sign. By clicking on this emblem, a compact box will appear at the bottom of the screen providing information about the size of each force. Players then have the option to withdraw, engage in a practice battle, or initiate the actual combat by pressing the central button.
During battle, players have the ability to command their individual squads by clicking on the squad leader and giving orders using the mouse. The game provides three strategic choices: “Give Permission to Shoot,” “Guard the Archers,” and “Keep in the Rear.” Additionally, players can opt for surrender or disbanding if the situation turns unfavorable.
Regardless of the outcome – victory or defeat – the aftermath of the battle will unfold naturally as the surviving soldiers return home. Players might acquire treasure or earn influence with specific factions based on the current political landscape.
