Following the surprisingly positive response to my list of favorite real-time strategy games, I wanted to share another look at the games I enjoy – this time, historical titles. These games let me step into the past, whether as a soldier, a commander, or the leader of an empire, and experience what history might have felt like. I don’t require absolute historical accuracy; instead, this list highlights games – including series like Total War and Age of Empires – that truly immerse me in the period they represent, even if they don’t get every detail exactly right.

You’ll notice a lot of games about World War 2 and the Medieval period here, as those eras have always fascinated me. These are the games I personally enjoy playing when I want to experience history, whether it’s something I’ve read about or seen in a film. I could list tons of games, but I’ve narrowed it down to the ones that really stand out and offer a captivating look at the past. Just a heads-up, I studied History in college, so I might get a little carried away with the details!

10 – Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway

The Brothers in Arms series is widely considered the greatest World War II first-person shooter series ever created. For me, Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway stands out above the rest. While previous games focused on Normandy, this installment delves into the less-covered Market Garden Operation, a risky Allied attempt to capture key bridges in Holland and push their forces towards Arnhem. Unfortunately, the operation was ultimately unsuccessful.

Even in 2025, this game stands out with its impressive visuals, compelling story, and realistic World War 2 combat. It continues to play incredibly well and remains one of the best-looking WWII first-person shooters ever created, especially considering it’s almost two decades old. If you’re a fan of World War 2, enjoy shows like Band of Brothers, or are interested in the Market Garden operation, you should definitely check this game out.

9 – Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

Strategy games often explore the medieval period, with classics like Age of Empires and grand titles like Crusader Kings 3. However, we haven’t seen many medieval role-playing games – until now. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 offers an incredibly realistic look at medieval life. Set in 15th-century Europe, you play as Henry, seeking revenge for his parents’ death, and you have the freedom to approach this quest however you choose. What really stands out is the combat – it’s incredibly immersive, realistic, and flows beautifully. If you enjoy RPGs like The Witcher 3 and Skyrim, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is definitely worth checking out – I highly recommend it!

8 – Field of Glory II: Medieval

When deciding on a game to recreate medieval battles, I narrowed it down to three choices. Total War: Medieval 2 would have been a solid option, offering plenty of entertainment. Another possibility was Age of Longbow by Wargame Design Studio. While more realistic and historically accurate than Total War, its outdated graphics were a downside. Finally, there was Field of Glory II: Medieval, which, as a historian, I believe offers the most realism, the most content, and a good balance between presentation and ease of learning.

Okay, so as a strategy gamer, let me tell you, Field of Glory II: Medieval is seriously top-tier. We’re talking tons of different units and nations, and pretty much any medieval army you can think of is in there. What really sets it apart is how realistic the battles feel – the game mechanics actually make sense and lead to believable outcomes. Plus, if you own the original Field of Glory II, you can mix things up and create crazy ‘what if’ scenarios – like pitting English longbowmen against Roman legionaries! Honestly, it’s a fantastic historical strategy game that doesn’t get enough attention, you absolutely need to check it out.
