Interested In Finding Out My Top 10 Favorites?
I started Firaxis (originally OneHexAway) in 2017 and have written hundreds of articles since then. While I’ve shared plenty of opinions and critiques, I’ve never actually revealed what my favorite strategy games are – until now.
Creating a list of favorite games is surprisingly difficult, especially after playing so many over the years. Memories fade and change, and what we enjoy evolves over time. Our tastes shift, our perspectives change, and the world around us influences how we experience entertainment. I remember when I used to dislike turn-based strategy games, preferring fast-paced action. But after twenty years, my opinion has completely flipped.
Now that’s settled, keep in mind this is just my personal selection of games, each representing a different period in my life. Welcome to my collection of Firaxis favorites!
10 – Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition
If I had to pick one strategy game as the perfect example of what a video game should be, it would be Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition. It’s truly one of the best real-time strategy games ever created and perfectly captures what I look for in a game. As you’d expect from a Warhammer game, everything is epic, with amazing combat and base-building, a huge variety in visuals, and powerful abilities. Plus, it’s packed with lasers, explosions, and the sounds of battle! I didn’t get to play it when it first came out in 2004, but after experiencing it this year, it’s easily become one of my top 10 favorite strategy games of all time.
9 – Red Alert 2
Red Alert 2 was one of the first games I ever played on my PC, back in the early 2000s, and it quickly became a favorite. It took the serious backdrop of the Cold War and imagined a wildly different outcome – one involving time travel, incredible inventions like Tesla towers and jetpacks, and even giant squids! Beyond its over-the-top sci-fi elements, Red Alert 2 is a well-designed real-time strategy game with responsive controls, lots of ways to win, and a single-player campaign that many fans consider one of the best ever in the Command & Conquer series.
8 – Empire Earth
It’s hard to explain exactly why Empire Earth remains one of my all-time favorite strategy games based on its features alone. While it was impressively deep, strategically free, and visually ahead of its time for the early 2000s, the biggest reason is the incredible nostalgia I have for playing it as a child. The game’s core idea – guiding a civilization from the Stone Age to the distant future – truly captured my imagination. The progression from clubs and spears to muskets, tanks, and ultimately futuristic robots is still unlike anything I’ve experienced in another game. If you enjoy classic titles and want a truly unique real-time strategy experience, I highly recommend checking out Empire Earth on GOG – you won’t be disappointed.
