Nuno’s Top 10 Favorite Wargames of All Time

Introduction

When I create these lists, they’re based on a combination of my own preferences and what’s popular in the strategy gaming world at the moment. Since many of you rely on my recommendations – as I see in your emails and comments – I want to be transparent about my tastes. I’ve already shared my all-time favorite games and strategy games, so now I’m excited to reveal my top 10 wargames of all time – completing the picture of what this website is all about.

This list is just my personal take on these games, so it’s totally normal if your favorites are different! If you’d like to share your own top 10 wargames, please leave a comment – I’m really interested to hear what you enjoy!

10 – Battle Academy

Battle Academy is often considered the best starting point for anyone interested in wargames, and you’ll find it on almost every list of its kind. Set during World War II – a popular setting for wargames – it features a straightforward yet strategic turn-based combat system. I especially love it because it made the genre accessible to me. With excellent campaigns, plenty of affordable DLC adding new missions, units, and even historical or alternate-history scenarios, Battle Academy is a must-have for any wargame fan. Battle Academy 2 is also fantastic, focusing specifically on the Eastern Front.

9 – winSPMBT

I absolutely love this type of game because it lets me be really creative and build whatever scenarios I can imagine – whether they’re based on real history or totally made up. There are a few games that let me do this, like Arma 3 and Field of Glory 2, but there’s one wargame I think deserves way more attention. It’s packed with content and offers endless possibilities. And the best part? It’s called winSPMBT, and it’s completely free! Even if you don’t want to create your own battles, it comes with over 500 pre-made scenarios covering everything from the Cold War to modern conflicts, and there are almost 40,000 different units to play with.

This game offers an incredible amount of content, especially considering it’s free to play. Even though it was released almost 30 years ago, the paid version, which includes improved graphics, still looks great with its detailed pixel art. What really stands out is the battle generator – it lets you design all sorts of unique and exciting combat scenarios.

8 – Scourge of War: Waterloo

As a wargame enthusiast, Scourge of War: Waterloo really stands out to me. I mean, how many games go so deep into historical accuracy? This one is insane – they’ve meticulously recreated everything, even the specific uniforms and gear each regiment used on the day of the battle. It’s the most complete and accurate depiction of Waterloo I’ve ever seen. It’s not the most beautiful or user-friendly game, honestly, but it’s easily one of my favorites. The developers clearly love history, and it’s a blast experimenting with different scenarios and tactics to see how the battle could have unfolded. It’s just a really immersive and fascinating experience.
