As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed by Nvidia’s latest move with GeForce Now. Limiting playtime to 100 hours per month seems like a step back for a service that has always prided itself on unlimited gameplay. However, I understand their need to maintain quality and speed, as well as providing shorter queue times.
Nvidia is introducing significant modifications to its GeForce Now gaming streaming platform, one of which involves setting a cap on the amount of time users can spend playing games through the service.
On its official Reddit platform, Nvidia announced that starting next year, there will be a monthly play limit of 100 hours for using the GeForce Now subscription gaming service.
The company intends to maintain top-notch quality and swift service, along with reduced wait times, especially for Performance and Ultimate subscribers. The Performance package offers 1440p streaming, ray tracing, and six-hour gaming sessions at a monthly price of $9.99. On the other hand, the Ultimate plan provides either 4K 120 or 1080p 240 resolution with ray tracing, HDR, DLSS 3, longer eight-hour gaming sessions, and comes at a cost of $19.99 per month.
Free subscribers, which only offers one-hour sessions and has ads, won’t have a monthly limit.
Nvidia stated that this generous boundary easily fits 94% of its users, who usually appreciate the service within the given time span.
In simple terms, any extra gameplay time left at the end of the month that you haven’t used can be carried forward and added to your playtime for the next month, similar to how minutes were rolled over in traditional mobile phone plans.
In the peak scenario, players might enjoy around 115 hours of gameplay in a single month. Exceeding this limit will incur charges. Nvidia mentions that an additional 15 hours on the Performance plan will cost players $2.99 per month, while those on the Ultimate plan will be charged $5.99 for an extra 15 hours within the same period.
Beginning in 2025, not everyone will immediately encounter the 100-limit restriction. According to Nvidia, active members who have their subscription renewed or maintained by December 31, 2024 will enjoy an additional year of unrestricted gameplay, with the changes only taking effect in January 2026.
In summary, individuals who hold a Founders membership can enjoy unrestricted gameplay “indefinitely”. Yet, should they choose to upgrade or alter their membership, fresh limitations will be applied.
