Nvidia’s Controversial DLSS 5 AI Trailer Has Been Taken Down

The YouTube video of Nvidia’s DLSS 5, which received a lot of criticism for its AI upscaling quality (some called it ‘AI slop’), has been taken down due to a copyright claim. The initial demo in March sparked controversy, and now Nvidia is facing a new issue with the video itself.

The last few years have been incredibly successful for Nvidia, the graphics card maker. A new report shows they now control over 90% of the market for PC graphics cards, and the rise of artificial intelligence in the 2020s has made them one of the most valuable companies globally. But with such a dominant position comes greater attention, and recently, Nvidia has faced some public criticism.

Nvidia’s DLSS 5 Trailer Hit with Copyright Strike

A YouTube video showcasing Nvidia’s new DLSS 5 technology is no longer available due to a copyright strike. Gaming creator NikTek discovered the video was taken down by La7, an Italian media company, who claim it infringes on their copyright. NikTek believes La7 is issuing claims against all videos that used a clip from the DLSS 5 trailer featured in one of their news reports. Several other content creators have confirmed NikTek’s findings, though this isn’t stated in the official copyright notice.

As a long-time YouTube user, I’ve seen so many complaints about how easily the copyright strike system is abused. It’s really frustrating, and honestly, scary! I’ve even heard stories about scammers pretending to be big companies like Nintendo, sending fake copyright claims just to try and get money out of people. While I don’t think this situation with La7 is about that, if they are trying to claim footage that belongs to Nvidia, like some people are saying, it wouldn’t be the first time someone has really taken advantage of YouTube’s system to get away with something.

It’s currently uncertain whether the claims made by La7 regarding copyright are accurate or how extensive they are. What we do know is that the trailer for DLSS 5 has been taken down, and the takedown notice lists La7 as the claimant. This situation is unusual because copyright issues with AI typically involve AI generating content that infringes on artists’ work – but that doesn’t seem to be what’s happening here. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has stated that DLSS 5 isn’t like generative AI, explaining that it simply enhances existing images instead of creating new ones.

The outcome of this copyright issue is uncertain, but it’s just the latest problem for Nvidia. Although some developers, like Todd Howard from Bethesda, have been positive about Nvidia’s DLSS 5, many gamers have strongly criticized its graphics and overall effect on the gaming world. This DMCA takedown request is probably the last thing Nvidia needs right now, even if they’re eventually found to have done nothing wrong.
