At long last, after much anticipation, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has officially been released. On April 22, Bethesda and Virtuos unveiled the first official sneak peek at the game, leaving fans of the series spellbound by a beautifully revamped version of Oblivion, masterfully reimagined with Unreal 5 technology and constructed upon the original framework.
In the unveiling of Oblivion Remastered, both teams emphasized all the numerous enhancements they’d made, yet acknowledged the game’s “nostalgic appeal.” Those who are acquainted with the original game will understand Todd Howard’s reference, and while it was delightful to see its preservation, the blend of fresh details with the original roughness might be a two-sided coin.
There Is a Deep Uncanny Valley in Oblivion Remastered’s Beautiful Presentation
During the live broadcast, Virtuos detailed that they rebuilt the game using Unreal Engine 5, which is built upon the foundation of the initial Oblivion engine. This approach enabled them to maintain the authentic atmosphere of the original game while significantly upgrading the visuals and certain gameplay elements. With a hefty file size of 120GB for Oblivion Remastered, it’s clear that a great deal of effort was invested in modernizing the appearance of the province.
Several visual enhancements are evident, such as the lush rolling hills of Cyrodiil gleaming under revamped lighting, and the Deadlands of Mehrunes Dagon truly embodying their terrifying essence. Additionally, animations have been refined, using Oblivion’s original skeletons and introducing more distinct separation points. This modification allows models to exhibit a greater level of realism, as only certain parts of an object will respond to its surroundings instead of the whole thing reacting.
Although the enhanced version of “Oblivion Remastered” is impressive in many ways, the way characters move can be unsettling to some, as they appear to wobble like puppets rather than smoothly navigating the screen. The improved facial animations for lip-syncing are a notable improvement, but when paired with the highly detailed and somewhat bulky faces modeled after the originals, it creates an eerie effect.
Although not everything appears awkward in the Unreal 5 trailer, some characters seem to adapt better. Emperor Uriel Septim stands out as particularly majestic, with his character model and animation complementing Patrick Stewart’s voiceover exceptionally well. However, many other models still display a distant gaze, which is reminiscent of Oblivion and somewhat eerie. This could potentially deter new fans who find the mix of visual styles and gameplay feel unsettling, but longtime players might be thrilled by how faithfully Oblivion-like it all is. Time will tell whether this eclectic blend turns out to be a hit or miss, but it’s certain to generate some peculiar videos on social media.
…there’s a strange, unsettling quality to how these models behave, which might not appeal to everyone.
How the Uncanny Valley Might Work In the Favor of Oblivion Remastered
The unique, somewhat peculiar, aesthetic of Oblivion has been both a major asset and drawback for the game, but this could potentially be an advantage in the remastered version. Fans were eager for, and developers acknowledged, the need to retain the “charm” that defines Oblivion, which undeniably gives it a distinctive identity, despite the fact that many Skyrim players may have opted not to play it due to its unusual art style thus far.
It’s refreshing to note that some flaws from the original game remain in Oblivion Remastered, which might have adversely affected its status as a popular meme. However, since it is essentially an older game given a contemporary makeover, playing it will undoubtedly feel odd. As fans get their hands on the remastered version, they’ll be the ones to decide, but there’s no doubt that nostalgic elements are hidden under those high-definition landscapes.
