In the climax of the main storyline within the game “Oblivion”, there are series of events that have far-reaching impacts, even affecting the much later game “Skyrim”. The conclusion in “Oblivion” unfolds in the core of the Imperial City, inside the Temple of the One. This ending is rather swift and may be hard to follow due to its complexity. A significant portion of the lore from “Oblivion’s” final battle is among the most intricate yet vital within the Elder Scrolls series, and it delves into St Alessia’s pact with Akatosh, the concept of apotheosis in The Elder Scrolls, and the essence behind Martin’s sacrifice.
When Mehrunes Dagon, an evil being, invades Mundus, the realm that houses Tamriel, Martin shatters the Amulet of Kings, transforming himself into a manifestation of Akatosh, a deity appearing as a dragon. This avatar engages in battle with Mehrunes Dagon until the latter is vanquished and banished back to Oblivion. The avatar then metamorphoses into a stone statue of a dragon that remains a fixture at the Temple of the One. Upon finishing the main quest, Oblivion Gates no longer open in Cyrodiil, thus concluding the Oblivion Crisis.
Why Martin Destroyed the Amulet of Kings
The heart of the ending in Oblivion lies within the Amulet of Kings and the special connection of the Septims as dragonblood individuals, suggesting they are dragonborn. This bond with Akatosh, the one who formed the dragonborn, means only dragonborn can wield the Amulet of Kings, a rule that was set when St Alessia sealed her covenant with Akatosh at the creation of the Amulet. Since the Dragon Fires remained unlit, the covenant went unfulfilled, leaving an opening for Mehrunes Dagon to assault Tamriel.
When Martin breaks the Amulet of Kings, it responds to him like a dragonborn, summoning Akatosh to Tamriel in the shape of a fire-formed dragon. Upon banishing Mehrunes Dagon, and with the annihilation of the Amulet, the ancient pact is demolished, giving way to a new one. This results in preventing Daedra invasions into Mundus and eternally sealing the open doors to Oblivion.

Did Martin Septim Mantle Akatosh?
There’s a lot of discussion within the community of The Elder Scrolls series about the true essence of Martin’s sacrifice. Some disagree on Akatosh’s involvement and whether Martin took on the role of Akatosh in his last moments. In The Elder Scrolls, mantling is similar to apotheosis – it’s when a person ascends from being human to becoming an existing deity. This process is described as “walking like them until they must walk like you.” Since Martin didn’t imitate Akatosh in any way, some believe he did indeed mantle the dragon god. However, it’s important to note that, semantics aside, Martin fully embodied Akatosh during that moment, allowing Akatosh to manifest as an avatar.
In the game “Skyrim”, following Dagon’s defeat and the emergence of Akatosh, the boundary separating the mortal world (Mundus) from Oblivion became self-maintaining and no longer relies on the Amulet or Dragon Fires for upkeep. This event is hinted at by Sheogorath, a character who is strongly suggested to be the Hero of Kvatch who witnessed the battle. Sheogorath implies that Martin, who later became Akatosh, was indeed the Hero of Kvatch and underwent a transformation into a dragon god. This transformation marked the end of the Septim dynasty, as foretold by one aspect of the Dragonborn Prophecy. The events set in motion the conflict with the Thalmor and shaped the state of the Empire during the time of “Skyrim”.
