Virtuos’ latest release, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, excels in various aspects, but stands out particularly for its significant advancement in visual quality. The 2006 version of Oblivion, developed prior to Bethesda’s introduction to their controversial Creation Engine, has been reworked using Unreal Engine 5, demonstrating the potential beauty this classic game can achieve with modern technology.
The numerous advantages of this UE5 overhaul are apparent: it offers a wealth of lighting and special effects, enhances character movements, and both indoor and outdoor settings are significantly more realistic and true-to-life compared to the original Oblivion. Despite some fans’ initial worries that Unreal Engine 5 could compromise the original game’s visual style, these apprehensions have largely been allayed, as Oblivion Remastered successfully preserves the 2006 game’s distinctive aesthetic, showcasing Cyrodiil’s verdant beauty in stunning detail. The visual flair is most evident in the Planes of Oblivion themselves, where the remaster excels, particularly in terms of visual and atmospheric elements.
Oblivion Itself Looks Better Than Ever in Oblivion Remastered
Oblivion Is Darker, More Grotesque, and More Terrifying in Oblivion Remastered
The Planes of Oblivion, found via portals scattered across Cyrodiil, lie beyond our mortal world. These planes are parts of Mehrunes Dagon’s realm, fiery wastelands that bear a striking resemblance to Christian Hell depictions in the west. It’s also evident that heavy metal culture has significantly influenced their visual design, particularly aspects that are eerie, grotesque, and seem to revel in horror without restraint. This metal-music influence is also noticeable in the naming of certain areas and items within Oblivion, such as Corpse Masher, Corridors of Dark Salvation, and Blood Feast.
In terms of its visual appeal, the game Oblivion, being essentially the “Hell” in the world of The Elder Scrolls, could have benefited from a darker, more fitting aesthetic rather than the vibrant and somewhat cartoonish graphics it had in 2006. This choice detracted from the intended horror and intensity of the Planes of Oblivion, making them appear less frightening and more like an oversaturated, rubberized version of the H.R. Giger-inspired architecture and medieval technology found within.
In Oblivion Remastered, things have undergone a noticeable change. Enhanced visuals keep Oblivion’s fiery spirit alive, but in a more authentic and engaging way: the intense neon-red hue of Oblivion’s lava has been swapped for a darker, more ominous color scheme, and excessive bloom effects have been substituted with particle effects, which are more lifelike and less intrusive. Moreover, the remaster utilizes darkness more effectively, as the interiors of Oblivion are now filled with foreboding shadows that instill a profound sense of primal fear.
In the remastered version, the Giger-inspired design is more effectively brought to life. The improved textures add depth and complexity to Dagon’s realm, enhancing its grotesque appearance. The fleshy walls, doorways, and mysterious sacs of Oblivion resemble the disturbing world of Scorn. These elements are inherently unsettling and revolting, which adds to their effectiveness given the story’s context.
2006 found the Planes of Oblivion particularly chilling, but today’s gaming landscape has evolved, making modern players less susceptible to the initial shock of these demonic dimensions in their original form. With exposure to a wide variety of grotesque, frightening, and unusual visual horrors, contemporary audiences have set a higher standard for such content. Remarkably, the improved graphics in Oblivion Remastered make its horror elements even more impactful.
