Wow, 2025 has been huge for Pokemon GO! And get this – another big thing is happening soon. Earlier this year, Scopely – the people who made the super popular Monopoly GO – bought Pokemon GO. So far, I haven’t noticed any massive changes *because* of the acquisition, but I’m definitely expecting things to evolve. It feels like change is coming, that’s for sure!
Initially, the maximum level in Pokemon GO was 40. Just over four years after the game’s release, the level cap increased to 50, and players needed to earn XP and complete challenging tasks to reach levels 41 through 50. This is being updated with a major Pokemon GO update arriving on October 15, which will significantly change how leveling works.
Pokemon GO’s Level Cap is Going from 50 to 80 on October 15
On October 15, the Pokemon GO level cap will be raised significantly, jumping from 50 to 80. This change is designed to speed up the leveling process for players. The challenges that previously existed between levels 41 and 50 will be removed, and new challenges will be introduced for levels 71 to 80. When the update launches, some Pokemon GO players will automatically increase in level based on their current XP. However, developers have assured players that no one will be demoted to a lower level.
It’s been five years since the Pokemon GO level cap went from 40 to 50, and many players feel it’s time for another increase. However, few predicted such a significant overhaul of how leveling works, and it will be fascinating to see how the community responds. Major Pokemon GO updates sometimes receive a lot of positive feedback – the introduction of raids is a good example – but other changes have been met with criticism, like the graphics “update” which many players disliked because of how it altered their avatars.
Pokemon GO players should anticipate continued updates to the game after the recent level cap increase. Many Pokemon haven’t yet appeared in Pokemon GO, and the Generation 10 Pokemon games are projected to be released in the next few years. These new games will surely add even more Pokemon to the series, which will then provide more content for Pokemon GO. Although its popularity has decreased somewhat, Pokemon GO is still a leading mobile game and looks set for a promising future.
