October 24 Could Officially Be the Day That Hell Freezes Over for PlayStation and Xbox

There’s been talk recently that Halo: Combat Evolved might be completely rebuilt, and surprisingly, it could even be released on the PlayStation 5. Halo: Combat Evolved was one of the first games available when the original Xbox launched, and it quickly made Halo the most important franchise for the company. Halo is as crucial to Xbox as Super Mario is to Nintendo, which is why people were so surprised to hear it might appear on rival consoles.

For over 20 years, that statement held true. However, things have evolved, and Xbox’s focus has changed significantly. They’ve moved away from competing in the console wars and trying to drive hardware sales with exclusive games. Now, Xbox is actively releasing its games on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, with classic exclusives like Forza Horizon and Gears of War receiving PS5 versions this year. Forza and Gears are definitely huge Xbox franchises, but neither carries the same weight as Halo potentially coming to PS5. If the rumors about Halo on PS5 are accurate, it would mark a real turning point.

Halo 1 Remake Could Be Coming to PS5

The Halo World Championships are happening later this month, and there’s talk that new Halo projects will be revealed during the event, especially on October 24. Many believe one of these announcements will be for the Halo: Combat Evolved remake, which is reportedly coming out next year to mark 25 years of the Halo series and Xbox. Furthermore, there’s speculation that the Halo: Combat Evolved remake will launch simultaneously on PS5. If this turns out to be true and is announced on October 24, it would be a massive surprise for both the PlayStation and Xbox brands.

Okay, so this whole PlayStation and Xbox being friends thing? It feels a little one-sided to me as a gamer. Xbox has been really generous, letting PlayStation players jump into games like Helldivers 2, which is awesome. But honestly, what have PlayStation gamers gotten in return? Nothing really. Sony hasn’t said anything about bringing their big exclusive titles over to Xbox. However, I’ve heard rumors that the next Xbox might be able to run Steam, which could mean we’ll eventually get access to more PlayStation exclusives anyway, even if Sony doesn’t officially port them. It’s a bit frustrating as an Xbox fan, but that Steam thing gives me hope.

The long-running competition between gaming consoles is beginning to ease, and previously unbreakable boundaries are falling. Halo being available on PS5 would likely be the definitive end to that rivalry, although this hasn’t been confirmed yet. Regardless, fans should definitely remember October 24th.
