October 31 is Going to Be a Sad Day for LittleBigPlanet Fans

Key Takeaways

  • LittleBigPlanet 3 is being delisted from the PlayStation Store on October 31.
  • Those that already own it will be able to retain access to it after it’s delisted.
  • LBP3’s DLC is also being delisted that day.

As a long-time fan of the LittleBigPlanet series, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia and disappointment as I hear about LittleBigPlanet 3 being delisted on October 31. I remember countless hours spent creating my own levels, sharing them with friends, and exploring the vast array of user-generated content that made this series truly unique.

The confirmation has been made that LittleBigPlanet 3 will no longer be available on October 31. At a certain point, LittleBigPlanet was a significant franchise for Sony. The initial LittleBigPlanet was incredibly successful on the PS3, while its sequel, LittleBigPlanet 2, garnered much acclaim. LittleBigPlanet 3, though not as widely popular, was the sole main series game released for the PS4.

For those not acquainted with these games, the “LittleBigPlanet” series is a type where multiple players can cooperate on platform-style adventures. Each installment offers a pre-made campaign for players to conquer, yet it was the user-created content that truly set them apart. In essence, the “LittleBigPlanet” games provide users with the means to craft entire games themselves. Over time, numerous extraordinary creations have been designed by enthusiastic fans, but unfortunately, much of this work has vanished into oblivion.

Earlier this year, the online servers for the game “LittleBigPlanet 3” were shut down, denying players access to countless user-created levels. This was a heartbreaking moment for the “LittleBigPlanet” community, as the servers of the earlier games had been closed a few years back. Unfortunately, more disappointing news has surfaced: It’s been confirmed that “LittleBigPlanet 3” will be removed from sale on October 31st, along with all its additional content. This change makes it challenging for newcomers to find the game, although existing owners can still re-download their content.

When is LittleBigPlanet 3 Being Delisted?

  • LittleBigPlanet 3 is being removed from the PlayStation Store on October 31

2017 saw me snagging LittleBigPlanet 3 through the free PS Plus offer, and I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed ever since hearing about its potential delisting. Thankfully, Sony has come through and confirmed that we’ll still be able to play it even after October 31. However, for loyal LittleBigPlanet fans like myself who have faced one disheartening announcement after another recently, this news might not quite take the sting away.

It appeared for a while that Sackboy might become PlayStation’s official mascot, but that opportunity seems to have been missed. Lately, Sony hasn’t given much attention to the LittleBigPlanet intellectual property (IP), with the last major game launching in 2020. Sumo Digital introduced Sackboy: A Big Adventure in 2020, a 3D platformer version of the series that omitted its creation aspects. In 2023, Sony released Ultimate Sackboy, an endless runner mobile game, but it fails to satisfy the craving for the main LittleBigPlanet titles as effectively.

It would be great if the popular game series, LittleBigPlanet, could resurface at some point, allowing players to rebuild their beloved user-created levels from previous versions. Currently, we don’t know what the original developer of LittleBigPlanet, Media Molecule, is currently working on. Consequently, it’s possible that a LittleBigPlanet 4 may be in development. Given that the servers for the LittleBigPlanet games have been closed and LittleBigPlanet 3 has been removed from sale, this might just be the opportune moment to launch LittleBigPlanet 4. However, fans should temper their excitement as we cannot predict what will happen with the series.
