This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
Summary
- Oda hints at potential revival of a major One Piece character from Elbaf
- Oda dislikes killing characters but also avoids reviving dead characters
- Big Mom’s return is hinted at in the Elbaf arc, but her death was never confirmed
Currently, the storyline of “One Piece” is unfolding in its Final Saga, and the Elbaf chapter, now in progress, is picking up pace. Given that Imu has made his way into the country, the danger to Elbaf has become a very tangible reality. On top of this, Imu has transformed several characters into grotesque undead creatures, ensuring that as the “One Piece” narrative continues, fans can expect some electrifying battles ahead.
In this storyline, Oda has subtly added some intriguing “suggestive symbols” implying that the peril facing Elbaf may not be its only threat. It’s possible, despite seemingly insurmountable odds, that Oda plans to resurrect a character during the Final Saga.
Oda Doesn’t Like Bringing Back Characters From The Dead

- Oda Doesn’t Like To Bring Back Dead Characters
It’s common knowledge among fans that Oda dislikes eliminating characters. In fact, he has openly expressed this sentiment before. As per Oda, it becomes challenging to depict grand final gatherings when numerous characters are killed, as he prefers such scenes. Consequently, Oda doesn’t frequently eliminate characters. However, he also understands the significance of character deaths in various aspects.
Why did Ace have to die in such a cruel way? — Oda
In the Final Saga of One Piece, several characters have met their demise, yet creator Eiichiro Oda shows no inclination towards resurrecting them. As stated by Oda, character revival is not a concept he is particularly fond of. He believes that once characters are killed off in a fitting manner, they should remain deceased. This is Oda’s stance on bringing back characters within the world of One Piece.
Question: Why didn’t you create a manga like some other mangakas where dead characters revive?
Oda: Isn’t it unnatural to bring a person back to life, chuckle? If a manga author eventually resurrects a deceased character, they shouldn’t have killed that character in the first place. My characters don’t meet their end even when they find themselves in dire straits.
Additionally, I’ve disliked the resurrection of previously deceased characters since my childhood. This skepticism often arises within me, thinking something like, “Perhaps the mangaka chose to bring back a specific character due to its popularity.
Instead of following the path I once doubted as a child, I’ve decided to fulfill the aspirations I had back then, which were similar to those of a mangaka. Over the past decade since I began, my goals have remained consistent – to meet the expectations of my 15-year-old self.
Oda’s intentions regarding character resurrections are transparent to fans, yet he intentionally leaves some character endings vague. This allows him to reintroduce these characters into the narrative without actually killing them off. A notable example is Big Mom, and on multiple occasions, Oda has suggested her comeback in Elbaf.
Oda Could Bring Back Big Mom
Big Mom’s Return Was Hinted Again in One Piece Chapter 1150
There’s been no hiding the fact that Oda has been subtly suggesting Big Mom’s comeback in Elbaf. For example, the Giants of Elbaf frequently spoke about defeating Big Mom throughout the arc. Additionally, the children’s nightmares, induced by Killingham’s Kirin ability, often featured a figure resembling Big Mom. In One Piece chapter 1150, Imu resurfaced the mother nightmare, and her image in this instance is strikingly similar to Big Mom’s appearance during the Wano arc when she boosted her power to confront Law and Kid.

Is Big Mom Going To Return?
It’s important to note that Big Mom’s death has not been officially confirmed. The Big Mom Pirates were spotted around the end of Wano, which could mean they managed to save her. At present, there are signs pointing towards Big Mom making a comeback, possibly in Elbaf, though it might be after that as well.
