Old School RuneScape is Blowing Up on Steam

The classic version of RuneScape, known as Old School RuneScape, has never been more popular. Just recently, it broke a new record for the highest number of players online simultaneously on Steam. Originally launched in 2013, Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is one of two editions and caters more to the preferences of traditional fans compared to its successor, RuneScape 3 (RS3).

Jagex Studio is consistently maintaining both versions, Old School RuneScape and RuneScape 3. Notably, Old School RuneScape has introduced a fresh in-game skill called Sailing, giving players a sneak peek on March 20th this year. Furthermore, the studio unveiled Varlamore: The Final Dawn on July 23rd, which marks the conclusion of the Twilight Emissaries series for Old School RuneScape. On the other hand, RuneScape 3 has just introduced a new boss character, Amascut, the Goddess of Destruction.

For over a decade now, since its release in 2013, “Old School RuneScape” has consistently shattered records. It previously set an impressive all-time high concurrent player count back in December 2024 with a total of 231,000 players simultaneously engaged. More recently, it surpassed this record, according to tracking site misplaceditems, which reported a staggering 240,756 players playing the game concurrently as of August 3. Jagex also acknowledged the milestone on the game’s social media platforms, expressing gratitude to players for enjoying “Old School RuneScape” and breaking its previous peak player count record.

Old School RuneScape Sets New Concurrent Player Record

It’s plausible that the consistent breaking of player count records by Old School RuneScape is connected to Jagex’s constant release of new content for the game. Notably, Varlamore: The Final Dawn was launched for Old School RuneScape on July 23, shortly before the game achieved its latest concurrent player record. Furthermore, within the community, players are continually generating and distributing creative content to help promote the game, such as this amusing video featuring chef Gordon Ramsay at Lumbridge Castle in Old School RuneScape.

It’s clear that various factors have kept the chat about Old School RuneScape lively. In fact, RuneScape has been acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the biggest and most frequently updated free MMORPG available. Not only are newcomers investing hundreds of hours into the game, but its dedicated fanbase is also consistently dedicating a significant amount of time to it. Remarkably, one player even invested an impressive 10,000 hours in Old School RuneScape to complete a personal challenge.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that Old School RuneScape has successfully retained its substantial player base even amidst occasional resistance from the community. For instance, when players voiced their discontent over a survey by Jagex asking them to select features they might be willing to pay for, the response was met with dissatisfaction. Later, Jagex issued an apology and has since focused on less contentious issues in their polls, showcasing their dedication to consider and incorporate player opinions. Additionally, Old School RuneScape continues to maintain a 82% positive rating on Steam, with 70% of the latest reviews within the past month being favorable.
