This morning, Takaya Imamura, the renowned ex-Nintendo artist who has been with the video game company for over three decades, posted something new on X and requested that Star Fox Assault (released in 2005) be ported to the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.
Imamura Is The Original Designer Of Iconic Nintendo Characters Such As Captain Falcon, Fox McCloud, And Many More
In 2021, Imamura bid farewell to Nintendo, concluding a 32-year career with the company that he spent primarily collaborating with Shigeru Miyamoto, who initially recruited him back in 1989.
Initially planning to create and visualize game packaging for the company, Imamura developed a fondness for both video games and science fiction. He even declared back then that “Metroid” was his preferred Nintendo game.
In a short while, his focus shifted to F-Zero, where he was responsible for creating Captain Falcon. Subsequently, he also developed and sketched numerous boss characters, levels, and the emblem for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (released in 1991).
Two Years Later, Imamura Began Working On Star Fox (1993) And Designed The Cast Of Characters In The Game
Following a proposal from Miyamoto about incorporating an animal-only cast into the game, Imamura drew inspiration from Japanese folklore and his fellow Nintendo colleagues to fill out the vibrant zoological roster of the series. It is said that the character Fox McCloud was modeled after Miyamoto himself.
Today, Imamara shared a monochrome sketch featuring Fox McCloud gazing ahead while clutching a miniature submarine. Accompanying the image was a caption.
Celebrating today’s anniversary of the releases of Star Fox Assault and Steel Diver Sub Wars, I can only imagine how fantastic it would be if these classics found their way onto the future Nintendo Switch 2!
The fourth installment in Nintendo’s Star Fox series and the final one launched on the Nintendo Gamecube, this game aimed to reestablish the franchise’s traditional style following the controversial gameplay of the preceding title, Star Fox Adventures, which deviated significantly from the gameplay experienced in earlier Star Fox games.
Originally, a game titled “Steel Diver: Sub Wars” could be obtained for free on the Nintendo 3DS system. Unfortunately, as the 3DS’ online store (the eShop) has now closed, it is no longer legally available for purchase.

In previous instances, Imamura has made comparable requests to Nintendo. The most recent collaboration between them was Star Fox Zero for WiiU (2021), which was six years old when Imamura also took to Twitter, asking for its port to the original Nintendo Switch.
Despite retiring from Nintendo, Imamura continues to work in the gaming industry to this day.
At present, Nintendo hasn’t revealed any intentions of bringing Star Fox Assault or Steel Diver: Sub Wars to their upcoming console.
