Once Human Called Out for Allegedly Reusing Assets from a Popular Space Game

The game Once Human is facing criticism for allegedly using an asset from No Man’s Sky and selling it as a special, paid-for cosmetic item. Because Once Human is a free-to-play game, it relies on sales of in-game currencies and cosmetics to generate income. Since launching, the game has repeatedly been accused of including stolen artwork in its premium offerings.

Man, things have been rough for Once Human since it launched. First, people were calling them out for basically lifting an icon straight from Rainbow Six Siege – a weapon charm in their battle pass was exactly the same as Caveira’s icon. Now, it’s happening again! It looks like Starry Studio, the developers, are being accused of copying another item from a different popular game. It’s just… not a good look, you know?

Once Human’s Lightwheel Hoop Looks Very Similar to the Teleporter in No Man’s Sky

Fans on Reddit have noticed that a new piece of furniture in the game Once Human, called the Lightwheel Hoop, looks remarkably similar to the Base Teleport Module from the game No Man’s Sky. The shape, design, and patterns are nearly identical, suggesting it may have been copied. The main differences are the addition of an exercise bike within the hoop and a slightly different color scheme.

A Reddit user pointed out potential asset theft in the No Man’s Sky subreddit, noting that Once Human sells similar cosmetic items through its Lightforge Lootcrate, which exacerbates the issue. The user explained, “It wasn’t just the lookalike designs that bothered me—No Man’s Sky gives players the Teleport Module as they play the game, while Once Human sells something very similar as a prize you have to pay for in a loot box.”

In November, the game Once Human introduced a new paid cosmetic system called Thunder Overload Lootcrates, which includes items like the Lightwheel Hoop. Players purchase a currency called Crystgin to open these crates, with each attempt offering a chance to win premium cosmetics. A ‘pity system’ ensures players receive something valuable after 20 tries. However, many players are unhappy with the cost of these crates and feel that the Lightwheel Hoop’s design appears unoriginal or even copied.

So far, the creators of Once Human haven’t officially responded to the claims of copied artwork. However, they might adjust or remove the item in question, just like they did when a similar issue arose with Rainbow Six Siege. When players noticed the Hush Weapon Charm was nearly identical to a Rainbow Six Siege icon, the developers quickly swapped it for a redesigned version with different colors and a new style. We could see a similar fix for the Lightwheel Hoop, with Once Human potentially replacing it with a completely original furniture piece to avoid further accusations of plagiarism.

Players have pointed out similarities between the Teleporter in No Man’s Sky and the Stargate from the sci-fi show of the same name. While it may be inspired by Stargate, the No Man’s Sky teleporter still feels original and isn’t a direct copy. In contrast, the Lightwheel Hoop in Once Human appears to be a much closer, and less creative, imitation. It will be interesting to see how the Once Human developers address these concerns and whether they decide to remove the item from the game.
