As a seasoned survivor of the post-apocalyptic world of Once Human, I’ve faced my fair share of deviants, each one more dangerous than the last. Let me tell you about some of the most notorious ones and how they’ve tested my mettle.
Using an engaging and accessible tone: Once Human offers a captivating blend of Lovecraftian horror and survival gameplay, allowing players to jump in at no cost thanks to its free-to-play model. For those eager for extra perks, a monthly battle pass is available for purchase. Yet, the entire experience can be fully enjoyed without any financial commitment. Players have the flexibility to select either a Peaceful Environment Server for a more tranquil experience or a Player versus Player (PvP) server for a combat-focused adventure.
As a gamer in this survival shooter, I’ve noticed that there’s no shortage of bosses and mini-bosses to face off against. But let me tell you, even the regular enemies can pose a serious threat, especially those lurking within polluted zones, which are infamously known as deviant zones. These deviants come with their own set of unique attacks and tactics that newcomers like myself need to be wary of and adapt to swiftly if we want to make it through unscathed.
8 Spikehead Deviant
Can Spawn Behind The Player
Newcomers should be cautious around the Spikehead Deviant as it can pose a significant threat, even if they’re unaccustomed to its unique spawning mechanism. Occasionally, this creature may already be present in the area, allowing experienced players to handle it with ease.
The Spikehead Deviant may emerge from a concealed spawn pod, granting it the ability to appear anywhere within the influence of that pod’s reach. Players need to be cautious if they fail to notice these hidden spawn points, as Spikehead Deviants can still materialize unexpectedly, even behind them.
7 Spikehead Thrower Deviant
Heavy Ranged Damage
These deviants’ spawning process resembles that of the Spikehead Deviant, but there’s a twist with the thrower variant. Upon emergence, they can briefly teleport a short distance. However, a challenge arises due to their long-range damaging attacks.
I. For beginners wielding fundamental melee weapons, the Swarm of Spikehead Thrower Deviants may pose a threat, particularly when they appear in small clusters.ii. These Deviants call for close-range confrontation from novice players, making it essential for them to approach and eliminate each one individually.iii. However, there’s a risk that the Spikehead Throwers might teleport before being defeated, forcing players to repeat their efforts at a new location.
6 Smiling Suitcase Deviant
High Damage
An “Anima Deviant” in gaming terminology is referred to as the Smiling Suitcase. When this enemy is defeated, it discards its distinctive weapon (the suitcase head) which players can subsequently obtain and wield for a limited period.
For newcomers, it is recommended to deal with this anomalous entity first if it has appeared near a Point of Interest (POI). You’ll be able to identify them easily as they are significantly larger than other anomalous entities and exhibit unique animations upon activation. After spotting one, players can approach and grab the dropped Anima weapon that it leaves behind, which can then be used to eliminate any nearby anomalous entities.
5 Stage Light Deviant
Blinds The Player
An overly zealous Stage Light Monster may momentarily leave a player disoriented if it gets too near. It’s advisable for the player to eliminate this menace from a safe distance to prevent being temporarily blinded. The peril this monster poses doesn’t stem from its own harmful capabilities, but rather from the fact that the player becomes oblivious to any other potential threats in their vicinity.
Fortunately, when the rogue entity approaches a gamer, it emits a distinct sound signal as a giveaway. Typically, hearing this signal is the most effective method for identifying the presence of a Stage Light Deviant nearby, signaling the urgent need for the player to locate and eliminate it promptly.
4 Floater Deviant
Hard To Melee
The Floater Deviant perches at a height that poses two challenges in open environments. Initially, its positioning makes it difficult to identify among dense foliage or towering structures on the map. Secondly, this creature rarely descends low enough for melee attacks, compelling players to employ ranged weaponry instead.
A Floater Deviant inflicts harm from a distance and persistently trails behind the player unless eliminated. They frequently appear in duos or small clusters, posing a potential risk for novice players with limited ammunition.
3 Polluted Bee Deviant
Difficult To Spot
In the beginning of “Once Human,” encountering a Polluted Bee Deviant in its polluted habitat can be lethal. These enemies deal considerable harm and are tricky to identify, particularly when they’re near trees. They also tend to appear as a small band.
When encountering a wayward Polluted Bee Deviant, it may approach the ground for an easy melee kill, but be prepared to sustain some damage in the process. A more straightforward solution would be: Keep your distance and aim to shoot down the Polluted Bee Deviants as soon as you spot them to avoid taking harm while closing in.
2 Exploding Deviants
Just Run Away
Deviant attackers behave similarly to clinging landmines. Upon locking onto a player, they move in for a close-range assault before detonating. In advanced gaming areas, an explosive deviant can significantly deplete a player’s health.
A significant challenge with encountering Exploding Deviants lies in their ability to spawn indoors. In the event that a building is dimly lit, players might not detect the enemy’s presence as it approaches and detonates. Moreover, using melee weapons to eliminate these adversaries can be hazardous since they explode upon being killed. Instead, maintain a safe distance and take them down with ranged attacks.
1 Living Drill Deviant
Can Drill Underground
An irritating foe named The Living Drill Deviant emerges as a significant hassle in combat. After sustaining a certain level of harm, it burrows into the earth and reappears close by or even behind the player. Consequently, players reliant on ranged attacks will find themselves pushed into melee engagements.
In simpler terms, a melee attack from a Living Drill Deviant inflicts considerable harm. It’s best to keep your distance if you can. If you encounter two or more of these creatures in an open-world survival game, beware! A player unaware of the danger may not make it out alive.
