One Borderlands 4 Harlowe Skill May Be a Double-Edged Sphere

The long-awaited sneak peeks of Harlowe in action from Borderlands 4 have finally started emerging, with initial focus on other Vault Hunters such as Vex, Rafa, and Amon. On paper, Harlowe already seemed formidable, boasting crowd-control and team-oriented abilities that distinguish her from the pack. Now, these skills have been brought to life in various visual presentations, demonstrating even further her immense power. In her debut trailer, we get a glimpse of her Action Skills, one of which appears to be among the most destructive abilities in Borderlands 4…but there’s a catch.

Among Harlowe’s action skills, the Chroma Accelerator appears to be a potentially game-changing ability for Borderlands 4’s Vault Hunters. Upon activation, Harlowe releases an Unstable Energy Pocket that travels forward, chilling enemies it touches and then can be detonated for a wide-area radiation explosion. Before the full reveal, Harlowe was already hinted to be one of the game’s heavy hitters, but the Chroma Accelerator certainly emphasizes this point. However, any ability with such destructive potential needs balancing, and the Chroma Accelerator definitely takes that into account.

Borderlands 4’s Chroma Accelerator Is Both Harlowe’s Biggest Weapon and Weakest Link

A Skill That Can Level Bosses

It’s no surprise that Harlowe’s Chroma Accelerator skill is now widely admired among players due to its potential for a massive, player-directed explosion. Once fully enhanced, it not only inflicts Cryo damage across the battlefield but also detonates into a far-reaching burst of Radiation. This makes it one of the most eye-catching and powerful boss-defeating moves in Borderlands history. With additional enhancements such as Q-Ball or Special Purpose Magnets, its destructive power increases even further, allowing it to ricochet between enemies or draw entire groups into its blast radius.

From first glance, Chroma Accelerator appears akin to overpowering boss fights in Borderlands 4. Essentially, it resembles an on-demand nuclear explosion for players. As it sweeps through the battlefield, it unleashes area-of-effect damage upon mobs. However, its true spectacle lies in its final detonation. Regrettably, leading up to this finale might clash with Borderlands 4’s narrative flow.

A Weapon That Slows the Game Down

In essence, Borderlands has always been known for its quick-tempo battles. With its fresh movement mechanics that prioritize speed and agility, it seems like Borderlands 4 will have players zipping around even more swiftly. However, this could potentially put Chroma Accelerator at a disadvantage, as while its final explosion packs a powerful punch, the ability’s movement speed is rather sluggish. The sphere fired by Harlowe does hit enemies on its path, but due to its straight trajectory and slow pace, enemies might have ample time to escape or disperse. To complicate matters further, Chroma Accelerator takes some time to activate, which could render it less effective in the more frantic encounters – a type of battle that is likely to be common in Borderlands 4 combat.

Despite seemingly being at a disadvantage compared to other Vault Hunters in fast-paced environments of Borderlands 4, Chroma Accelerator will possess an edge in combat skills. Uniquely, Harlowe is the sole character with this type of Action Skill, as other characters’ abilities primarily revolve around summoning allies, building defensive structures, melee attacks, and direct gunfire. At least, during boss battles in Borderlands 4, Chroma Accelerator could potentially give Harlowe an advantage over the others.
