As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the announcement of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom as the next mainline installment has certainly piqued my interest. However, I can’t help but feel a sense of trepidation when it comes to the Gerudo.
As a gamer immersed in Hyrule’s world, I can attest to the fact that each race has its distinct traits that make them stand out among the inhabitants. For example, the Gorons have a sturdy, rock-like form and can protect themselves by transforming into a rolling ball. Zoras, on the other hand, are humanoids with a fishy appearance, known for their aquatic prowess and natural swimming skills. However, the Gerudos, with their mysterious allure, have always been the most captivating race in Hyrule. Sadly, the introduction of a new protagonist in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom might alter that appeal significantly.
In the game titled “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom“, we’re not witnessing a complete overhaul of the series’ conventions, but there is a significant shift – instead of Link, Zelda takes center stage as the primary playable character. This change will undoubtedly alter the game’s traditional combat dynamics and could potentially impact the portrayal of the Gerudo. Traditionally, the Gerudo have shown disdain for Link due to their matriarchal society and stringent laws. However, with Zelda as a female protagonist, it is expected that these interactions might evolve. Consequently, “Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” must carefully craft its portrayal of the Gerudo to ensure they remain as distinctive as before despite this change in dynamics.
Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom’s Gerudo Need to Stand Out
Zelda Will Likely Receive Better Treatment From the Gerudo in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
In the world of Zelda, the Gerudo are an all-female community that naturally lack male offspring except for one time every hundred years. This rare male is ordained as their future king. Although other males have been present in Gerudo society, only Ganondorf – the main villain of the series – has been featured. Regrettably, after assuming the throne, Ganondorf deceived the Gerudo, leading to a deep mistrust of men. As a result, they enforced strict rules to keep males out of their settlements and community.
Previously in the Zelda series, the character Link, being male, was barred from entering Gerudo settlements. Conversely, since Zelda is a female character, she theoretically could enter these settlements without issue. Although this potential scenario might create intrigue, it could potentially dilute what makes the Gerudo tribe distinctive.
Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom’s Gerudo Need a Different Defining Quality
In the game “Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,” it’s essential that the Gerudo women are portrayed differently from their previous iterations to reflect Zelda’s unique status. If the Gerudo continue to be represented as a female-only group, they may appear ordinary to Zelda, who is not a member. However, the way the Gerudo interact with Zelda in this game seems more casual and familiar, suggesting that they view her as one of their own, even though she’s not technically a Gerudo. This intriguing change in dynamic sets “Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” apart from its predecessors.
Regardless of how logical it seems based on Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom‘s plotline, it could potentially be unfair to the Gerudo, who seem to warrant a larger role given their significance in the story.
It’s possible that in the game Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, the Gerudo might be aligned with Ganondorf or another malevolent force, which could suggest their apparent friendship towards Zelda is a disguise rather than a genuine response to her as a woman. Alternatively, the game could delve into the culture of the Gerudo, giving them new traits that haven’t been seen before. Regardless, given their unique nature, the Gerudo should receive special attention in this new installment, just as they have in previous games.
