Fans of Pokemon have been treated to a lot of news recently, but most of it hasn’t provided insights about the franchise’s future. Yet, even if certain features were removed from previous games, they could still make a comeback in the upcoming main series Pokemon installments.
Game Freak, the creators of the popular series Pokemon, has unfortunately experienced a significant data breach, resulting in an unprecedented amount of sensitive information from various stages of previous games being leaked online. Although some fans may view this as exciting, it’s crucial to keep in mind that such leaks come with a downside. In their statement regarding the Pokemon leak, Game Freak expressed concern over the exposure of their employees’ personal data among the leaked information. This includes discarded Pokémon, early versions of older games, and even abandoned game mechanics that have been shared online. A cut feature from Generation 6, the possibility for players to design their own Pokémon gyms, is one potential candidate that could potentially return in a future game.
Pokemon’s Cut Content Deserves a Second Chance

As a gamer, I’d have loved the opportunity to build my own gyms for others to challenge, but sadly, this feature didn’t make it into the final game. Now, I can only speculate why it was left out, considering Game Freak’s impressive track record in the gaming world. If they decided against it, there must have been a compelling reason behind their decision.
Pokemon X and Y from Generation 6 were groundbreaking for the series because they introduced 3D graphics, new types like fairy and mega evolutions, and pushed Game Freak’s creative limits. It’s amazing that these games turned out as good as they did given the significant changes. Although building gyms was a fun idea for players, it wasn’t essential to the game’s success.
Despite the past, there remains a possibility for unused material from the Kalos region to emerge in the future, especially since gamers are set to revisit this world with Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Some speculate that abandoned Mega Evolutions could reappear. If additional content is indeed revived, it wouldn’t be surprising if Game Freak revisits the concept of gyms once more.
Pokemon Gen 6‘s Cut Gym Feature Has Some Precedent
Despite the data breach causing distress for Game Freak, they might be able to leverage this situation positively. The public response could offer valuable insights into the potential success of upcoming game mechanics. Since players have enjoyed designing unique gyms in Pokemon GO, it’s crucial for Game Freak to take fan feedback into account moving forward.
In the games Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, as well as Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, players were given the unique opportunity to create small gyms using secret bases. This feature was reminiscent of an earlier mechanic from Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
