However, what truly stands out is the show’s dedicated cast members, many of whom portray multiple characters within the show. No one embodies this more than Hank Azaria, who has been part of the show since its inception four decades ago, voicing more characters in that single series than most voice actors do throughout their entire careers (while still maintaining a busy schedule with other projects). He has also received four Primetime Emmy Awards for his performances.

Although Mr. Azaria’s career and achievements, envied by many aspiring voice actors, might seem like a perpetual dream come true, he expressed concerns in a New York Times article about his impending job loss, despite “The Simpsons” not indicating any signs of ending soon. Azaria believes that AI could potentially replicate the various voices he created for characters on “The Simpsons” over nearly four decades, which makes him feel sad and uneasy. In Azaria’s case, he points out that AI could have access to 36 years of Moe, the grumpy bartender, who has appeared in almost every episode of “The Simpsons.” This extensive data could be used to train AI, as Moe has experienced a wide range of emotions, from love and fear to anger and sadness. However, Azaria also fears that the AI-generated replacement might not measure up to his performance.

It’d be fascinating to consider that even if an AI replicates the voice of Moe, Snake, or Chief Wiggum perfectly, it won’t capture the essence of humanity – the unique traits and qualities that make each person distinct. After all, my individuality is deeply ingrained in how I speak, and it seems almost impossible for a computer to replicate everything about me.

Azaria, who has created numerous unforgettable characters for the TV series “The Simpsons,” also shared his thoughts on how this might impact the show’s quality temporarily. He questioned, “What will it sound like without human elements? How substantial will the change be? I can’t say for certain, but I believe it will be significant enough, at least in the short term, that we’ll detect something seems out of place, much like noticing a lack of quality in a mediocre movie or TV show… It accumulates to a feeling that what we’re watching doesn’t feel genuine, and ultimately, it’s something we don’t need to engage with.” He concluded by saying, “Authenticity is earned through skill, with strong storytelling, compelling performances, excellent cinematography, skilled direction, a well-written script, and great music.

For some time, AI has been a contentious topic in the entertainment industry, particularly regarding its application in creative projects. This was highlighted during the 2023 strikes where major productions were disrupted. Though both sides eventually reached an agreement, the general sentiment among actors, voice actors, and writers suggests that they are not fully satisfied with the safeguards established for their work. This is troubling news since Azaria correctly points out that voice acting encompasses more than just the vocal aspect. AI may one day perfect a voice talent’s performance on an old show, but it will never replicate the creativity and human touch that enabled Azaria to create such memorable voices so effortlessly. The concerning part is that AI could eventually eliminate the need for other talented individuals in the same field since AI would merely use them as resources.
