As a lifelong Marvel fan who grew up reading X-Men comics and binge-watching animated series, I can wholeheartedly say that it’s high time for Gambit to get his own solo game. The Ragin’ Cajun has always been a fan favorite, but after his recent resurgence in popularity thanks to appearances in shows like X-Men ’97 and Deadpool and Wolverine, I think we’re finally ready for a full-blown Gambit adventure.
Following the thriving success of Rocksteady’s Arkham series and Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, it appears that the superhero video game genre is enjoying a resurgence. Upcoming titles like Wonder Woman, Marvel Rivals, and Marvel’s Wolverine indicate that this trend isn’t likely to slow down anytime soon. The main curiosity seems to be which hero will get their own game next.
That question is mostly answered by the public zeitgeist; some characters are more popular than others and are more likely to get games. Obviously, there are heavy hitters like Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Superman who have the street cred to carry a game, in addition to characters like Logan, who is in the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac. But occasionally the moment is right for a B-Lister to have enough popularity to warrant a solo outing of their own, and a certain X-Man has had a huge year that should pave the way for a game of his own.
It’s Finally Time for a Gambit Solo Game
Gambit’s Powers Lend Themselves Perfectly to a Game
The character Gambit, cherished by X-Men enthusiasts for years, gained significant recognition among the broader audience following his roles in “X-Men ’97” and “Deadpool and Wolverine”. Now, considering the heightened interest in this character, it seems opportune to leverage this increased appeal and grant Ragin’ Cajun a standalone video game of his own – a long-overdue recognition.
Despite the recent surge in public interest in Gambit, he has long been an ideal character for a standalone game due to his unique abilities fitting perfectly with a third-person action format. His power to imbue objects with kinetic energy opens up a diverse arsenal of attacks, both melee and ranged. Essentially, any item within the game that can be picked up or thrown becomes a potential weapon for the player. Given Gambit’s background as a street fighter, a solo game featuring him could involve leveraging the environment around him to his advantage, much like an enhanced version of Dead Rising.
Gambit Inspires a Unique Marvel Game Setting
When discussing his surroundings, there’s no better scene for a Gambit game than the vibrant city of New Orleans itself, often referred to as “The Big Easy.” Remy’s Cajun persona is deeply rooted in his identity, and New Orleans plays a significant role in that entire culture. Throughout much of Gambit’s character history, when he’s not at the X-Mansion, you can find him frequenting Bourbon Street. A Gambit game wouldn’t feel right without New Orleans as a key location.
Beyond its significance to the storyline, New Orleans offers an exceptionally vibrant backdrop for a sandbox game that has been surprisingly overlooked thus far. While New York has been extensively explored as an open world setting, New Orleans hasn’t received the same level of attention. Games like “Red Dead Redemption 2” and “Infamous 2” are notable exceptions, but they are fictionalized representations of the city, with “RDR2” even presenting a historical reenactment of New Orleans. In terms of accurate modern-day recreations of New Orleans, it’s somewhat underrepresented. The upcoming Gambit game presents an excellent chance to portray the city with the same care and detail that Insomniac used when creating NYC in “Marvel’s Spider-Man”.
Gambit Has the Makings of a Loveable Game Character
Lastly, yet just as importantly, the cause behind Remy’s recent resurgence is undeniably his captivating character.
Character Gambit is incredibly engaging, brimming with narrative possibilities. He sports a roguish exterior and carries an air of nonchalant recklessness, yet beneath that facade lies a hidden heroism and a classic romantic soul reminiscent of yesteryears. The storyline can either emphasize his humorous side, similar to what we saw in Deadpool and Wolverine, or it could stick closer to the comic book version of Remy, as portrayed in X-Men 97. Regardless of the approach, both versions have demonstrated immense popularity.
It might be wise to capitalize on the current momentum and release the game promptly, yet caution suggests delaying. Perhaps Insomniac Studios will develop a Gambit game as an extension of their Marvel Universe. This sequel would likely follow after the events portrayed in Marvel’s Wolverine, allowing for any mutant narratives that game introduces. Given its reputation, Insomniac is well-suited to bring Gambit’s story to life; however, it seems Gambit will have to bide his time a bit longer to establish himself in the gaming world.
