One Marvels Spider-Man Villain Deserves Redemption More Than Others

Highlights

  • Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series humanizes iconic supervillains, depicting their redemption and acceptance in society with sincerity.
  • Martin Li, despite his dark past as Mr. Negative, showcases introspection, humility, and self-sacrifice in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
  • Li’s potential return in the next installment could lead to him earning forgiveness from Miles Morales, though that’d be a hard road for both characters.

As a seasoned gamer with a heart for Marvel lore and a soft spot for redemption arcs, I find myself deeply moved by the portrayal of Martin Li, aka Mr. Negative, in Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series. The way these games humanize iconic villains is nothing short of remarkable, and Li is no exception. His journey from philanthropist to Mr. Negative, and his subsequent struggle for redemption, resonates deeply with me.

Marvel’s characters are often portrayed as having lighter tones compared to those in DC’s mythology, and there’s a solid explanation behind this. In Marvel’s Spider-Man series, some well-known supervillains have been depicted as empathetic figures who have endeavored to make amends for their past wrongdoings. Interestingly, these characters are accepted back into society without much suspicion or apprehension from the public.

  • Aaron Davis’ Prowler.
  • Dr. Curtis Connors’ Lizard.
  • Flint Marko’s Sandman (having recently caused mayhem in New York City as the gigantic Sandman, Marko is safe from Kraven while incarcerated and thanks Spider-Man for ensuring that his daughter is safe, suggesting that he’s not intentionally a villainous character).
  • Lonnie Lincoln’s Tombstone.
  • Quentin Beck’s Mysterio.
  • Honorable mentions: any of the obscure, bottom-tier villains explicitly referenced at Coney Island, such as Hydro-Man, Speed Demon, and Big Wheel.

In an unexpected twist for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Tombstone’s rehabilitation emerged as a surprise. Few remaining villains were left to seek redemption following Kraven’s reign and eventual demise in New York City. However, Martin Li was kept alive and held captive by Kraven, providing Insomniac the opportunity to pit him against Miles Morales, who was struggling with loss, in a gladiator-like arena. By the game’s end, Miles had not forgiven Li, regardless of the outcome. On the other hand, Mr. Negative is one of the few Spider-Man antagonists who has genuinely earned and deserved redemption, at least based on his portrayal within the game.

Marvel’s Spider-Man’s Mr. Negative is Tormented and Tragic

In the Marvel’s Spider-Man game, Otto Octavius’ Doctor Octopus was exceptionally well-crafted as the main antagonist. However, it’s disappointing that Martin Li’s Mr. Negative, who largely drives the game’s storyline, becomes somewhat marginalized when Otto unveils himself as a ruthless plotter.

In the game “Marvel’s Spider-Man”, Li and his inner struggles add a great deal of authenticity. By getting acquainted with Li prior to his transformation into Mr. Negative, players can understand that there is a compassionate and sincere individual hidden beneath all the anger and trauma. The reason for Li’s intense hatred towards Norman Osborn isn’t immediately clear at the start of the game, but it becomes intriguing when he directs his energy-based abilities against Norman. This suggests that Li has already been positioned as an adversary before there’s even a hint that he could become the Green Goblin, a role he hasn’t assumed yet in the franchise.

Li appears as a compassionate figure who values those he collaborates with, such as Peter Parker’s Aunt May. It might seem strange that a kind-hearted man like Li could be a ruthless villain in disguise, but that’s indeed the nature of Li we observe. His alliance with Otto is based on trust and shared animosity towards Norman. However, this alliance unfortunately leads to Otto releasing the Devil’s Breath, causing the death of many at the FEAST organization – including Aunt May once more.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Redeems Martin Li, But Not for Miles Morales

In the narrative of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Li remains adversarial towards Miles’ Spider-Man, a stance that persists until he discovers that his city hall assault led to the death of Miles’ father. This revelation could potentially bring about redemption for Li, but it is yet to be seen in the storyline.

Starting from then, Li becomes thoughtful and modest towards Miles, and he even makes an effort to locate Peter to inform him that Miles requires his assistance. Later, Li delves into Peter’s inner mind to liberate him from the harmful symbiote hive-mind, which had been controlling him, draining all of Peter’s abilities to develop the Anti-Venom symbiote instead.

It’s uncertain if Li has truly depleted his powers or if they can be restored at some point, but his decision to use them despite not knowing whether it would lead to his death was a courageous act of self-sacrifice. Li never believed that the goal he sought through violence was anything less than abhorrent. Since Kraven failed to kill him, it would be fascinating to see Li reappear in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, potentially finding a way to regain Miles’ trust.
