In simple terms, the latest release from Pokemon TCG Pocket, titled “Wisdom of Sea and Sky,” focuses on the Johto region from the Gen 2 games and showcases the creatures and characters associated with it. This ninth set boasts over 200 cards and has significantly influenced the game’s competitive scene, with many top-tier decks emerging that utilize new cards like Espeon Ex. Remarkably, one of the expansion’s standout cards is actually a baby Pokemon, despite not being featured in every deck within the format.

The Sea and Sky Wisdom pack presents various tools for producing different forms of energy and shifting it between bench and active Pokemon, a feature that enhances the arrival of Ho-Oh Ex and Lugia Ex cards. Although these specific cards and their supporting ones are the main highlight of this expansion, the A4 set of Pokemon TCG Pocket also debuted a new category of cards – baby Pokemon. These can be quite strong, but they have a significant weakness: just 30 HP. However, one of them is currently among the top cards in the game.

In the world of Pokemon TCG Pocket, these little creatures start with 30 HP which makes them vulnerable to quick elimination by common cards. However, they don’t require any retreat cost or have a specific weakness, offering some strategic advantages. Most notably, each baby Pokemon possesses a single immediate-use attack that requires no Energy, making it possible to launch an attack on the very first turn of a battle.

In a Pokemon TCG Pocket’s six-card pack, it’s common to find a baby Pokemon card in the last, or sixth, slot. This is because the sixth position usually contains one of the newly introduced baby cards.

Why Tyrogue is One of the Best Cards in Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Wisdom of Sea and Sky Set

It might come as a surprise, given that Magby and Pichu are known for their energy generation capabilities, and Cleffa for its ability to draw Pokemon cards, but the most effective baby Pokemon is actually Tyrogue. This is due to its attack, Slappy Knuckle, which inflicts 20 damage without needing any Energy. As a Fighting-type Pokemon, it can deal substantial harm to many competitive decks because of this. For instance, the newly introduced Crobat Ex deck in Pokemon TCG Pocket includes both Zubat and Crobat Ex, both of which have a Fighting weakness. This means that Tyrogue can inflict 40 damage on them.

Similarly, the current game meta is heavily influenced by Eevee decks, whether Umbreon EX or Espeon EX accompanied by Sylveon EX. These decks typically carry two copies of the new A4 Eevee card and two copies of Eevee EX. Since all Eevee cards are weak to Fighting, initiating the game with a Tyrogue on the field will likely result in the opposing Eevee being knocked out before it can evolve. However, Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Eevee EX has an attack that deals 30 damage using only one Energy card, so if Tyrogue is not equipped with Giant Cape, it can be defeated in a single hit by the Eevee EX.

Tyrogue Counters Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Strongest Meta Counter

Apart from its existing advantages, Oricorio poses a challenge to the standard strategy (meta) in Pokemon TCG Pocket, since it’s immune to damage caused by Ex cards. This usually forces players to incorporate methods for eliminating it in their decks, otherwise they might face inevitable defeats. However, Tyrogue can defeat Oricorio with just two attacks because, like Oricorio, Tyrogue is also weak against Fighting moves, and Oricorio has 70 HP.

In numerous strategies, such as those involving Darkrai Ex, Absol, Donphan Ex, and Lucario, Tyrogue is proving to be a valuable addition. The fact that it doesn’t need Energy makes it very beneficial for these decks, as they aim to quickly equip Energy on their main attackers. While this is happening, Tyrogue can inflict significant damage on the opponent’s cards, giving its user some breathing room.
