One of The Best Gen 6 Pokemon is the Worst in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Pokemon Legends: Z-A received a varied response from players. While some enjoyed the new way to explore and battle, others were disappointed with the game’s overall quality, lengthy tutorial, or map design. Despite its flaws, the game offers a lot of fun, especially with online ranked battles and the challenge of finding shiny Pokemon. It’s a clear tribute to the original Pokemon X and Y games, bringing back familiar characters and all the Pokemon from the Kalos region – some even with new Mega Evolutions. However, not all returning Pokemon fared well, and one in particular has become significantly weaker, potentially making it the worst Pokemon in the entire game.

In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, players can find many Pokemon simply by exploring the open Wild Zones, though some are rarer or only appear in specific conditions. For instance, Honedge appears in Wild Zone 4, but only at night. This was a welcome surprise for fans of the Gen 6 Pokemon, especially given how popular Aegislash was back then. However, despite being strong in previous games and competitive battling, Aegislash isn’t performing well in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Several factors contribute to this.

  • Despite being an extremely popular Gen 6 Pokemon, Aegislash doesn’t get a much-deserved new form and power up with Mega Evolutions.
  • Changing stances with Aegislash in Pokemon Legends: Z-A is very slow, at almost 2 seconds for the animation, to the point that the real-time combat can be very unforgiving for the Pokemon’s performance.
  • Aegislash’s signature move, King’s Shield, takes a long time to activate if in Blade Forme, and it also has a 16-second cooldown.
  • Aegislash has a BST of 500, with low attack stats in Shield Forme and low defenses in Blade Forme. As such, players are using Doublade in Pokemon Legends: Z-A with Eviolite equipped to have a better Aegislash that doesn’t need to change stances.
  • No other Pokemon in the game requires players to wait for animations to end just to start using a move, making Aegislash the slowest critter overall.
  • Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s best teams for ranked often include Garchomp, Charizard, and/or Gyarados, all of which can easily KO Aegislash even in Shield Forme.

In Pokemon Legends: Z-A and other core Pokemon games, the Eviolite item boosts a Pokemon’s Defense and Special Defense by 50% if that Pokemon hasn’t fully evolved. For example, Doublade, with a base Defense of 150 and Special Defense of 49, can raise those stats to 225 and 73, respectively, when holding Eviolite.

Say Goodbye to Aegislash in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Doublade, when equipped with Eviolite, can be incredibly powerful on both offense and defense, making it a better choice than Aegislash, particularly because Aegislash’s animations for switching forms are quite lengthy. While Doublade doesn’t have access to King’s Shield, that move is similar to Protect and isn’t essential for winning. Doublade can focus on dealing significant damage with attacks like Iron Head, Rock Slide, Shadow Claw, and Close Combat, thanks to the extra defense provided by Eviolite.

Doublade can learn the move Brick Break, which is a valuable asset in Pokemon Legends: Z-A battles. This is because many players are using Light Screen and Reflect, and Brick Break bypasses those defenses.

Aegislash was a top-tier Pokémon in the 6th generation due to its unique ability and strong stats. However, the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A features real-time battles, which don’t suit Aegislash’s slower, strategic playstyle. While some Pokémon in the new game might be weaker than others, Aegislash feels particularly frustrating to use. Unlike other less powerful Pokémon, it doesn’t feel good to play as.
