Streaming services offer a huge selection of movies and TV shows every month, letting you catch films you might have missed in theaters or re-watch favorite series. They also quickly add recent popular titles to their libraries. Peacock is especially good at bringing exciting new movies to subscribers, and on April 21st, they’ll be adding what many consider to be one of the greatest gothic horror films of all time.
Robert Eggers’ 2024 film, Nosferatu, was a critical and commercial success, earning $182 million worldwide. The movie, starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Bill Skarsgard, reimagines the classic vampire tale. While based on the 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (which itself was inspired by Bram Stokerās Dracula), Eggersā version builds on the original by giving the character of Elen Hutter (Depp) a more developed role, resulting in a more intense and psychological horror experience.
Nosferatu Is Less a Monster Horror and More a Psychological Thriller
Both the 1922 film Nosferatu and Robert Eggersā 2024 version tell the same basic story, but Eggersā film focuses more on the psychological aspects and less on simple scares. Ellen Hutter is a key character in both, as sheās the object of the vampireās obsession and ultimately causes his downfall. However, Eggersā film gives Ellen more control over her own fate, especially in the final scenes, and importantly, tells the story from her point of view.
Ellen feels powerless throughout the film, not just because she’s targeted by a vampire, but also because of the restrictive expectations placed on women in the 19th century. Her experiences are frequently dismissed as emotional outbursts or illness, and everyone around herāher husband, other men, and even the vampire Orlokātries to control her. However, Ellen eventually reclaims agency over her own life and makes a powerful choice to use her experiences for the greater good, transforming her from a victim into someone with control. This fresh take on the classic vampire story is compelling and will be available to stream on Peacock starting April 21st.
