Warning: This article contains spoilers for the One Piece manga.
A key reason for the success of the adventure series One Piece is its incredibly detailed and expansive world. This world isn’t just large, it’s filled with a wide variety of people and creatures. While humans are the most common inhabitants, many different tribes and races also live there, each with its own unique characteristics and customs.
In a harsh world where only the strong survive, the weak are often eliminated. In the anime One Piece, this process is heavily influenced by the Celestial Dragons. They eliminate certain groups either because the government deems them criminals, or simply because these groups are too powerful and could challenge their authority. As a result, many once-powerful races within the series are now nearly extinct or have disappeared entirely.
Fish-Men
Arlong was the first Fish-Man character introduced in the manga, and he unfortunately gave a negative impression of his people. He thought Fish-Men were better than humans and wanted to control the East Blue using his pirate crew. Although he was an extremist, he had a point โ Fish-Men are definitely one of the strongest races in One Piece.
Fish-Men are incredibly strong from birth, possessing ten times the strength of an average human. They can naturally breathe underwater and swim with ease. Those who become warriors can even learn to control water, similar to the powerful Fish-Man Karate techniques used by Jinbe.
Fish-Men are a diverse group, being half-fish and half-human, and each type has unique abilities. For example, Arlong, a Sawshark Fish-Man, can constantly regrow his incredibly sharp teeth and uses his tough nose like a weapon to break through rock. Hachi, an Octopus Fish-Man, is skilled at fighting with six swords thanks to his many arms. But the most frightening aspect of the Fish-Men is the legendary Ancient Weapon, Poseidon. Born only once every few centuries, a mermaid princess with this power can control massive sea creatures called Neptunians. Legend says Poseidon can even destroy entire islands with just a single order.

Giants
Giants are one of the earliest races shown in the series, and they live up to their name โ they’re ten times larger than humans! This immense size gives them incredible strength, making them natural fighters. Even the World Government recognizes how powerful they are and actively tries to control them.
Most people think of the Giants from Elbaf โ like Dorry, Broggy, Oimo, and Kashii โ when they hear the word ‘Giant.’ But they aren’t the only ones. While Elbaf Giants are considered the strongest, other Giant tribes exist and shouldn’t be underestimated. The Yeti Cool Brothers, for example, are powerful enough to impress even someone like Law, as seen in Punk Hazard, and their Giant heritage is still a mystery.
Ancient Giants
Ancient Giants are a particularly large tribe of Giants, three times bigger than normal. Legends say they once controlled the New World, but their fate is a mystery. Currently, there are no known Ancient Giants with pure bloodlines remaining in the story. The only named Ancient Giant introduced so far is Oars, a giant zombie used by Gecko Moria at Thriller Bark to hold Luffy’s shadow.
Legends speak of many Ancient Giants, but currently, they all appear to be frozen. Rocks D. Xebec sought an alliance with Harald hoping to bring them back to life. While no fully pure-blooded Giants remain, their bloodline hasn’t disappeared. Several characters still living carry Giant ancestry. Harald, easily recognized by his horns, is a prime example. His sons, Loki and Hajrudin, share this heritage as well. Though not pure-blooded, all three are incredibly powerful fighters. Harald was a match for Rocks in combat, Loki recently demonstrated the ability to challenge most of Elbaf, and Hajrudin has already proven his strength in Dressrosa.
Lunarians
In the world of One Piece, the Lunarians are a nearly vanished race known for their incredible toughness. Legend says they once lived on the Red Line, but currently, only King โ a powerful ally of Kaido โ is known to still exist.
According to King’s depiction, the Lunarians are a striking people with dark skin and black wings, marked by a blazing flame on their backs. They have the power to create and control fire, using it for devastating attacks. They’re incredibly durable, rumored to withstand any blow, but they aren’t unbeatable. Their vulnerability lies in extinguishing the flame on their back.
King is currently the only Lunarian character we know of in the story, but Vegapunk used his blood to create the Seraphim. These artificial beings also have a Lunarian appearance and possess the potential power of Warlords. Vegapunk further enhanced them by giving each one a Devil Fruit ability, making the Seraphim a formidable fighting force in One Piece.
Humans
Even though humans might not appear particularly strong in the world of One Piece, their overall power is undeniable โ theyโre the most common race for a reason. While a typical human would likely lose to members of other races, the truly exceptional ones are powerful enough to give humanity a significant advantage.
The D Clan is famous throughout the series, largely because Luffy belongs to it. Most of its members are powerful human fighters, with Gol D. Roger, Monkey D. Garp, Monkey D. Dragon, and Rocks D. Xebec being some of the most well-known. Similarly, the Celestial Dragons are a notable group, though many are unremarkable, figures like the Figarland Family, the Five Elders, and Imu stand out. Beyond these groups, powerful individuals like the Emperors (Big Mom and Whitebeard) and Warlords (Crocodile, Dracule Mihawk, and Gecko Moria) also hold significant influence.
