Summary
- Ashura Doji’s sacrifice in the Wano Country Arc felt unnecessary and anticlimactic.
- Little Oars Jr.’s sacrifice during the Paramount War of Marineford did not help the Whitebeard Pirates win.
- Smiley’s sacrifice by Caesar Clown to spread toxic gas was futile, as his plans were eventually thwarted.
In the realm of popular manga/anime like shonen, selfless acts or sacrifices are frequently employed as a compelling narrative tool. Unquestionably, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is not immune to this trend. Over the course of its lengthy duration, several significant characters have relinquished valuable possessions or even their lives to rescue others, making these instances among the most poignant and memorable in the entire narrative.
In the world of One Piece, not every moment carries deep significance, as certain characters’ sacrifices can sometimes appear to be without purpose. Either they were unsuccessful in their endeavors or an alternative, wiser course of action could have been taken instead. Although this isn’t a frequent occurrence, it has happened on occasion throughout the series, and these instances are among the most frustrating examples.
6. Ashura Doji
His Abrupt Sacrifice Didn’t Even Stop Kanjuro
- Debut: Chapter 920 (Manga), Episode 910 (Anime)
Even though the Wano Country arc left many viewers in awe, some fans continue to voice criticism regarding its handling of deaths, such as the case with Ashura Doji’s self-sacrifice serving as an illustration of this concern. Shortly after the Nine Red Scabbards had recovered from their wounds, Kouzuki Oden made his appearance before them, and it was he who discerned that Kurozumi Kanjuro was attempting to deceive them with one of his living drawings.
Instead of hesitating, Ashura Doji swiftly confronted the false Oden to eject him from the room. However, in an instant, he ignited some explosives that ended the life of the pink-haired samurai. Though it seemed impulsive, the room was teeming with strong and recovered samurai who could have devised another method to dispose of a sketch and its explosives without causing a casualty. What added to the tragedy is that this was merely a diversion, as the true Kanjuro soon assaulted the Nine Red Scabbards following Ashura Doji’s premature demise.
5. Little Oars Jr.
The Whitebeard Pirates Lost The Paramount War Despite His Sacrifice
- Debut: Chapter 554 (Manga), Episode 463 (Anime)
The momentous Battle at Marineford marked a significant shift in the world, claiming the lives of many crucial characters. However, there was one self-sacrifice that seemed somewhat unnecessary. Known as Little Oars Jr., this ancient giant sustained severe wounds during the fight (particularly after Gecko Moria pierced him through the heart), yet he mustered his remaining might to tow one of the Whitebeard Pirates’ ships into Marineford Square.
Following a valiant attempt to steer the colossal vessel past the obstacle, Little Oars Jr. was struck by cannonfire and collapsed, appearing to lose consciousness. Regrettably, this maneuver alone proved insufficient for the Whitebeard Pirates to secure victory in the ensuing conflict. Tragically, both Portgas D. Ace and Whitebeard met their end in the battle, leaving uncertainly as to whether Little Oars Jr.’s sacrifice ultimately cost him his life. Remarkably, the narrative never clarified whether Little Oars Jr. perished or survived after his selfless act, thus keeping fans guessing about his fate.
4. Smiley
Caesar Clown Intentionally Killed His Greatest Experiment For Nothing
- Debut: Chapter 668 (Manga), Episode 594 (Anime)
Oh, it’s amazing how some truly unique characters can slip through our minds amidst the bustling world of “One Piece”! I’m talking about none other than Smiley, a character that left quite an impression. This wasn’t your typical pet; he was a creation of Caesar Clown, a man with a knack for pushing the boundaries of science to the extreme. In his twisted pursuit of profit, he combined toxic substances with the Sara Sara no Mi, Model: Axolotl, resulting in this bizarre experiment. Smiley was born from this underworld-funded, deadly chemical weapons production line. Quite a fascinating, if not terrifying, tale!
To make his Shinokuni weapon operate, Caesar gave Smiley a peculiar candy that eliminated the creature, neutralized its Devil Fruit abilities, and scattered its harmful gases across Punk Hazard. This cold-hearted sacrifice was not just a squandering of an unspoiled Devil Fruit, but it was also futile, as the Straw Hat Pirates and G-5 Marines thwarted Caesar’s schemes and compelled him to reveal how to treat those exposed to Smiley’s toxic fumes.
3. Ryunosuke
Was He Just Kanjuro’s Cruel Joke?
- Debut: Chapter 803 (Manga), Episode 752 (Anime)
During the Zou arc in One Piece, an amusing yet implausible event unfolded as Kanjuro invoked his Devil Fruit abilities to create a caricature dragon named Ryunosuke, then magically brought it to life. The Wano samurai and Straw Hat Pirates subsequently hopped on this dragon’s back, using him like a stepping stone to navigate through Zunesha’s legs – a process that clearly exhausted the poor creature.
In a fortunate turn of events, spurred on by the Straw Hats’ motivation, Ryunosuke managed to ascend Zou and transform back into his original form as a drawing, leaving his new companions teary-eyed. Despite its comical (and somewhat emotional) nature, this scene seemed redundant when it was disclosed that Kanjuro had been deceitful all along, working against the Nine Red Scabbards’ plans. This revelation suggested that he could have crafted a much more impactful drawing rather than subjecting Ryunosuke to such distress. Looking back, making the Straw Hat Pirates develop fondness for him only to turn him back into a drawing appears to be a cruel jest in retrospect.
2. Hody Jones
Sacrificed His Health By Taking Energy Steroids, And Luffy Defeated Him Anyway
- Debut: Chapter 608 (Manga), Episode 527 (Anime)
As an avid fan, let me tell you I was thrilled to see Hody Jones step into the limelight during the Fish-Man Island arc. Fueled by his role as the main antagonist, he sought a powerful edge in our battle against Monkey D. Luffy and his fearless crew. His weapon of choice? A unique concoction known as Energy Steroids.
These intriguing pills, when ingested, amplified Hody’s physical might exponentially. However, in a misguided pursuit of power, he overdosed on them, transforming him into an unrecognizable, monstrous form that left me shaking in my boots!
Although he possessed an extraordinary new strength, he failed to conquer Luffy in his latest form due to the Straw Hat Pirate’s significant power growth after the two-year time skip. The unfortunate aspect is that the Energy Steroids carried a severe side effect that Hody Jones was unaware of: they accelerated his aging process drastically, making him an old and frail Fish-Man who required a cane just to stand upright. Ultimately, this rash decision did nothing to benefit Hody Jones or his crew in the long run.
1. Tsumegeri Guards
The Most Hilarious And Insulting Sacrifice In The Series
- Debut: Chapter 196 (Manga), Episode 120 (Anime)
The Tsumegeri Guards were a select band of warriors hailing from Arabasta, famed among fans for their significant role in an extraordinarily controversial and disrespectful sequence throughout the series. Their mission was to safeguard their realm against Sir Crocodile, and they achieved this by ingesting Hero Water – a potent elixir bestowing immense power upon them. However, the downside was that those who drank it would perish after just five minutes.
The Tsumegeri Guards willingly gave up their lives in an attempt to grow stronger and challenge Sir Crocodile. However, using his abilities derived from a sand-controlling Devil Fruit, Crocodile skillfully evaded all their assaults and ascended to a rooftop, biding his time for the effects of the Hero Water to manifest. Despite the bravery of their sacrifice, Crocodile taunted them mercilessly until their final moments, a fact not lost on even the other Arabasta royal guards like Chaka and Pell who, after their demise, were unable to overpower this Sea Warlord.
