Luffy is a remarkably likable main character in the world of anime. Many other heroes in similar shows share his optimistic and energetic personality, but Luffy has a special quality – both within the story and for viewers – that makes people connect with him.
Luffy is known for relentlessly convincing people to join his pirate crew, and it’s resulted in a colorful group of characters. However, some fans wish a few of those he convinced had actually become official members of the Straw Hat Pirates.
Bartolomeo
Given how much Bartolomeo looks up to Luffy, many fans expected him to become a member of the Straw Hat crew. He’s a devoted admirer and consistently demonstrates his willingness to do anything to protect Luffy’s honor.
Bartolomeo is a strong ally and captain in the Straw Hat Fleet, but he isn’t officially a member of the Straw Hat crew. He’d be a valuable addition to the core team, though it’s uncertain if he’ll ever get the opportunity to join them.
Marco
Marco, once a key commander of the powerful Whitebeard Pirates, would be a valuable addition to any pirate crew. He’s a highly experienced fighter with a unique Devil Fruit ability, and he’s known for being calm under pressure and reliable in tough situations.
It would have been fitting if one of Ace’s former crew members had sailed with Luffy, offering a connection to his brother. Marco, in particular, would have been a valuable addition, able to share memories of Ace. While he’s assisted them occasionally, it doesn’t look like he’ll be joining the crew permanently.
Carrot
Many One Piece fans hoped Carrot would become a member of the Straw Hat crew, but it didn’t happen. She was a valuable ally during the Whole Cake Island arc, and her interesting powers and optimistic personality made her seem like a good fit.
I always felt Carrot would have been a great fit with the Straw Hats, and her Sulong transformation would have been incredibly useful in a lot of fights. But for reasons only Oda knows, she didn’t end up joining the crew, and I think fans will continue to speculate about that decision for a long time.
Perona
Perona would have been an entertaining member of the crew, bringing a playful and dramatic energy that’s different from everyone else. While her dynamic with Zoro is already fantastic, it would have been really interesting to see her interact with characters like Franky and Brook too.
Honestly, I’m completely fascinated by Monet’s Devil Fruit, the Horo Horo no Mi! It’s such a cool power, and imagining it alongside Luffy’s Mythical Zoan and Robin’s ability… wow, that would have been a seriously intimidating Straw Hat crew! Even though she ended up on the opposite side, her history with Zoro means she’ll always be linked to them in my mind. It’s classic One Piece – she’ll probably be helping out in the shadows, and I can’t wait to see how that plays out!
Trafalgar Law
Considering his personality, it was unlikely Law would ever become one of Luffy’s crewmates, though Luffy probably would have welcomed him. Their interactions, and those between Luffy and other members of the Straw Hat crew, were enjoyable and showed us a fun possibility of what could have happened.
Beyond being a great teammate, Law would have been an excellent leader and his medical abilities were comparable to Chopper’s. However, it’s clear why he wasn’t a permanent member of the crew – they already had a captain and a doctor, so Law was always intended to be a short-term ally.
Bon Clay
Bon Clay is a popular character, and many fans wished he could have permanently joined Luffy’s crew. Like Robin, he used to work for Crocodile, but he had the potential to be a valuable member of the Straw Hats. He and Luffy clearly got along well, and he seemed to fit in easily with the rest of the crew whenever they interacted.
Although Bon Clay proved to be a steadfast friend to Luffy, and his ability to mimic others could have created some exciting possibilities for the crew, circumstances prevented him from rejoining them. It would still be wonderful to see him reunite with the Straw Hats, even if he doesn’t become a permanent member again.
Yamato
Many One Piece fans were disappointed that Yamato didn’t join the Straw Hat crew. After playing a significant part in the Wano Country arc, it seemed likely they would, especially considering their power and wish to travel the world like their hero, Oden. But unfortunately, it didn’t happen.
Yamato’s choice to remain in Wano and protect Momonosuke is understandable for their character, though it’s a bit sad for fans. They’ll continue to be a valuable friend to the Straw Hats and could be important in the story’s final events. While a new popular character might help soften the blow, Yamato will likely always be seen as the perfect Straw Hat crew member who ultimately didn’t join.
