One Piece: 7 Most Impactful Characters In The Series

As a huge One Piece fan, I’m constantly amazed by the incredible characters beyond just the Straw Hats! There are so many people who are just strong – not necessarily in power, but in their spirit and how they’ve shaped the story. They’ve really pushed Luffy and the crew to grow, and their impact is huge. Honestly, some of these characters are so memorable, I know they’ll stay with me – and with all of us fans – long after the series is over.

Oda’s storytelling in One Piece continues to improve, and many characters stand out due to their incredible accomplishments. Here are a few who have truly left their mark on the series.

Gol D. Roger

  • Devil Fruit: No
  • Haki: Yes

Roger, captain of the Roger Pirates, was the only person to ever successfully navigate and conquer the Grand Line. He became world-renowned for his incredible wealth, including the legendary treasure known as the One Piece. The World Government was so afraid of his power that they erased his name from history and branded him as evil. His scheduled execution drew all the future pirate leaders, eager to witness it firsthand. Ultimately, Roger’s confirmation of the One Piece’s existence sparked the Great Age of Pirates.

Monkey D. Luffy

  • Devil Fruit: Yes
  • Haki: Yes

Luffy is the central character and quickly wins over everyone he meets. He represents true freedom and has freed many islands from oppressive rulers. While the Government now sees him as a dangerous pirate, especially after his recent adventures in Wano, those he’s rescued consider him a hero, and he’s now closer than ever to achieving his lifelong dream.

Shanks

  • Devil Fruit: No
  • Haki: Yes

Shanks played a crucial role in Luffy’s life, essentially setting the entire story of One Piece in motion. If not for Shanks, Luffy would likely have joined the Marines, as his grandfather Garp desperately wanted. Also, Shanks was indirectly responsible for Luffy gaining his Devil Fruit powers. Later, Shanks single-handedly intervened at the Battle of Marineford, saving Luffy from a deadly encounter with Akainu.

Joy Boy

  • Devil Fruit: Yes
  • Haki: Yes

Joy Boy was a famous hero who bravely confronted a powerful group of 20 kings. Though history has tried to forget him, his story survives through ancient texts called Poneglyphs and the legend of the Sun God Nika. These tales portray him as the embodiment of freedom – something the World Government deeply fears. His impact is still felt today, with many people following his ideals, leading them to view him as a divine figure.

Vegapunk

  • Devil Fruit: Yes
  • Haki: No

Vegapunk is widely considered the world’s greatest genius, and his accomplishments are truly remarkable. He dramatically improved marine transportation and found a way to overcome the limitations of Sea Prism Stone, a major weakness for those with Devil Fruit powers. He’s also responsible for creating the powerful Pacifistas and Seraphim, which significantly impacted the Marineford war. Beyond that, Vegapunk has even managed to clone Devil Fruits and find a way to give them to non-living objects.

Kuma

  • Devil Fruit: Yes
  • Haki: Yes

Kuma initially appeared as a cruel ruler, but fans quickly learned his true nature was the opposite. The reveal of his heartbreaking past showed him to be one of the most selfless and kind characters in the series. His actions weren’t about power, but about helping others – he even saved the Straw Hat crew at Sabaody and inspired them to train and improve. This has made him a fan favorite and a remarkably well-developed character.

Bon Clay

  • Devil Fruit: Yes
  • Haki: No

Luffy and Bon Clay became close after the battle in Alabasta, where Bon Clay bravely sacrificed himself to protect the Straw Hat crew. Later, in Impel Down, Bon Clay repeatedly risked his life to help Luffy, ultimately aiding in the escape of everyone from the prison. He made sure Luffy and his allies reached Marineford, though his own fate remained a mystery for a while. Eventually, it was revealed that Bon Clay survived and is still in Impel Down, with a significant role planned for the future.
