The idea of immortality became important in One Piece when the Ope Ope no Mi was introduced, though it wasn’t fully explained at first. However, the Elbaf Arc revealed truly immortal beings – the Holy Knights, the Gorosei, the Dominate Reversi Demons, and even Imu. Interestingly, these immortals can be defeated, proving that immortality isn’t the same as being unbeatable. Here’s a look at the characters who have managed to overcome them in battle.
Sanji
- Defeated: Killingham
Recently, Sanji accomplished something incredible: he defeated a Holy Knight, a feat very few have managed. He did this purely through his own strength and skill. During the battle in the Elbaf Arc, Sanji moved so quickly that Killingham, the Holy Knight, couldn’t defend himself. Sanji defeated him with a single, powerful blow, completely destroying him and demonstrating that Holy Knights vary greatly in power.
Gaban
- Defeated: Sommers
Gaban was a remarkably strong warrior who sailed with Roger. After retiring from adventure, he settled in Elbaf and started a family. However, his peaceful life was disrupted when Holy Knights arrived, attempting to take children from the island. Gaban proved to be a formidable opponent, nearly defeating both Sommers and Gunko with his powerful Haki abilities.
Silvers Rayleigh
- Defeated: Sommers
Similar to Gaban, Rayleigh once defeated the Holy Knight Sommers, but it happened long ago during the God Valley battle. He intervened to save Shakuyaku from the World Nobles, who were using her as a prize in a competition. Rayleigh successfully rescued her and easily defeated everyone who tried to stop him, including the pirate-unlucky Sommers.
Loki
- Defeated: Harald
Loki is an incredibly powerful character, potentially as strong as the most elite fighters in the series. His strength comes from a legendary Devil Fruit, the Ryu Ryu ni Mi, Model: Nidhogg, which grants him immense power. He also wields Ragnur, a weapon that controls ice, and possesses exceptional Haki. This combination of abilities made him a serious threat, even to someone as powerful as Imu, and he’s considered the strongest of his kind. He easily defeated Gunko by completely freezing her, and also effortlessly defeated his father, Harald.
Monkey D. Luffy
- Defeated: Sommers
During the Elbaf Arc, Luffy’s focus was on finding Loki, which meant he didn’t participate in the battles of Sun World. However, this allowed crucial information to come to light, including the events of God Valley and the history of the pirate Xebec. Once Luffy returned from below, he quickly defeated Sommers, effectively taking him out of the rest of the arc.

Rocks D. Xebec
- Defeated: Figarland Garling
Xebec was once feared as a ruthless pirate who terrorized the Grand Line. Stories told of his incredible power – he even defeated a Marine Admiral easily and single-handedly attacked Marijoa. However, his reign of adventure ended at the God Valley Incident, where he fought to protect his family. During the battle, he effortlessly defeated Garling before challenging Imu himself.
Whitebeard
- Defeated: Satchels Maffey
God Valley was a tremendously chaotic battleground, hosting clashes between the most powerful figures of the era, including Whitebeard. He joined forces with Rocks, intending to rescue his family. During the conflict, Whitebeard unknowingly saved Dragon from a Holy Knight who was attempting to kill him. He defeated her with a single blow, barely even noticing he’d done so.
Imu
- Defeated: Jaygarcia Saturn
Imu is a supremely powerful ruler who controls the world with absolute authority. Their abilities are far beyond human comprehension, and they wield a weapon capable of completely destroying islands. Imu is also the source of the immortality enjoyed by the Elders and Holy Knights.
Imu demonstrated the power to instantly eliminate opponents, as shown when Saturn couldn’t capture Luffy on Egghead. This act of defiance provoked Imu, who then fatally drained Saturn’s life force in a terrifying manner.
