Saint Imu Nerona, the hidden ruler of the One Piece world, is the series’ biggest villain. For centuries, Imu has secretly controlled events, but their existence wasn’t confirmed until the Reverie arc, as revealed by the author, Oda. Seated on the Empty Throne, Imu governs the Celestial Dragons and, through them, the entire world.
It’s no surprise that Imu, as the main villain in One Piece, is incredibly powerful. While we haven’t seen everything they can do yet, Oda has shown us enough to understand why Imu controls the world and just how strong they are. Seeing their abilities more clearly in the Final Saga helps explain how…
6. Imu Is Immortal Likely Due To Ope Ope no Mi
Imu Is Canonically Immortal
Imu possesses several mysterious abilities, and their immortality is the most pressing one to examine. It’s been confirmed Imu existed during the Void Century, as revealed by Oda during the Reverie, and their continued existence proves this. While the source of their immortality remains unknown, both Ivankov and Dragon suspect Imu underwent the Perennial Youth Surgery using the Ope Ope no Mi at some point in the past.
Long ago, during the Void Century, Saint Imu Nerona was one of the original twenty kings who fought against the Ancient Kingdom. He wasn’t meant to be the ruler of the world, just one of the kings who pledged allegiance at the Empty Throne. However, Imu somehow seized power and became the one sitting on the throne, with everyone else bowing before him. Remarkably, Imu is still alive 800 years later, which strongly suggests he possesses immortality. The most likely explanation for this is the Ope Ope no Mi devil fruit. It’s well-known that this fruit allows someone to achieve immortality through the Perennial Youth Operation, but at the cost of the surgeon’s life. Imu likely underwent this procedure performed by a skilled doctor during the Void Century. This immortality is a key factor in Imu’s immense power.
5. Imu Has A Unique Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit
Image via Shonen Jump. Imu’s long life in the world of One Piece is likely due to the power of immortality, but that’s not all there is to them. The story has made it clear that Imu also possesses a Devil Fruit ability. While we don’t know exactly what it is, Imu’s ability to transform into a creature strongly suggests it’s a Mythical Zoan type Devil Fruit.
Allow Mu to show you the dominance of a God! — Saint Imu Nerona
We first saw this Devil Fruit power used when Sabo infiltrated Marijoa and fought the Five Elders and Imu. All six of them instantly transformed. Since the Five Elders gained their Yokai abilities from Imu, it’s likely Imu possesses a powerful Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit.
Imu swiftly changed into a massive, four-legged beast and effortlessly absorbed Sabo’s flames. They then used a sharp, arrow-shaped tail to impale both Sabo and King Cobra. This dramatic shift revealed a powerful, possibly demonic, mythical form, granting Imu incredible strength.

4. Imu’s Fruit Grants Demonic Powers
Imu’s Devil Fruit ability was revealed to have demonic origins during the Elbaf arc of One Piece. When Imu possessed Gunko, she dramatically transformed, growing large, bat-like wings and a dark tail with a pointed tip – a classic devilish appearance.
-
Imu believes they are a god, suggesting their Devil Fruit power grants them immense strength comparable to Luffy’s ‘Sun God Nika’ form. Additionally, Imu seems to enjoy transforming people into demons, implying they see themselves as a demonic deity within the world of One Piece.
3. Imu Can Use Demonic Contracts
Oda has already given fans a good look at Imu’s abilities. The most significant of these is a powerful spellbook. Imu can summon this book with a special enchantment, and it contains numerous spells. While the full extent of its power remains unknown, it’s clear this spellbook is incredibly strong.
Thou shalt not be bound by logic or reason, and become my slave. — Imu
When Dorry and Brogy attacked Imu, a single spell from their grimoire was all it took to defeat the two incredibly powerful warriors, who had a combined bounty of 3.6 billion berries. This spell, called Domi Reversi, allows Imu to either take a body part from an opponent or injure them using their own limbs. Imu then forces a contract upon the target, shortening their lifespan and replacing it with an immortal, illogical body. This effectively turns them into Imu’s obedient, superhuman slaves. Domi Reversi transformed Dorry and Brogy into these demon slaves, and Imu previously used the same power on Rocks D. Xebec in God Valley, proving even someone as strong as Rocks couldn’t resist its effects.
2. Imu Has The Power Of Covenants
Image by Viz Media Beyond the grimoire, Imu can also give others special powers called Covenants. Like Domi Reversi, these Covenants are based on agreements, and Imu grants them to his followers. There are three levels or stages to these Covenants that Imu can bestow.
- The Shallow Sea Covenant, which allows anyone who bears this power to pass through the Abyss immediately. In the Holy Land of Marijoa, they are under Imu’s watchful eyes at all times.
- The Deep Sea Covenant, which gives one unimaginable superhuman strength, as well as regeneration and immortality. At the same time, it also grants them access to the powers of the Abyss, and Imu can utilize their bodies as a vessel from any range.
- The Abyssal Covenant, which is the strongest of the three. On top of granting everything else that the Deep Sea Covenant grants, it also gives them an unaging body and at the same time the power of a Yokai as well. This is the strongest covenant that Oda has shown in the story, and is only utilized by the Five Elders, and most likely Gunko.
1. Imu Has Overwhelming Haki
Adding to their already impressive abilities, Imu is an exceptionally skilled Haki user. They wield all three types of Haki with incredible power. We first saw a display of Imu’s Haki during the Elbaf Arc, and its strength was felt from miles away, even deep within the Underworld of that giant country. Later, at God Valley, Imu’s Haki proved to be superior to even legendary figures like Roger and Garp, demonstrating a much higher level of Haki control. Currently, only Joy Boy is believed to have Haki stronger than Imu’s, making them the most powerful Haki user in the series.
