One Piece Anime Makes A Major Change To The Manga

This article contains spoilers from the One Piece anime.

The One Piece anime is currently adapting the Egghead arc, and the animation quality has been remarkably good considering the challenges. While the pacing hasn’t always been perfect, the anime has consistently delivered high-quality episodes over the past few months. Most episodes have been better than average, and several are even being called some of the best of the year.

A recent episode of One Piece, specifically episode 1152, has introduced a significant change from the original manga. During the battle between Saturn and Luffy and Bonney, the anime appeared to give Bonney the ability to use Conqueror’s Haki – a power she hasn’t demonstrated yet in the manga. This has confused some viewers, leading them to believe she already has this ability when she doesn’t.

One Piece Anime Gives Advanced Conqueror’s Haki Effects To Jewelry Bonney

The One Piece anime often includes scenes that differ from the original manga storyline. A good example is during the Wano arc, where Big Mom was saved from drowning by Prometheus, one of her creations. However, the manga already made it clear that Prometheus is vulnerable to water and wouldn’t survive being submerged.

The One Piece anime has consistently deviated from the original story, especially during the Egghead arc, significantly altering the plot.

The anime and manga versions of Sanji’s fight with S-Shark played out very differently. The manga strongly suggested Sanji was winning and rescued Nami and Brook. However, the anime showed Nami actually saving Sanji during the battle.

The anime also took many significant liberties with the manga, and some of these changes don’t really track. A recent example involves the character Jewelry Bonney.

Right after Bonney transformed into Nika, she attacked Saturn with a strong punch, timed with Luffy’s attack. The manga showed she only used Armament Haki for her attacks, launching a series of blows. However, the anime version showed red lightning coming from her fist, leading many fans to believe she was also using Conqueror’s Haki.

Luffy, Haki is a power that everyone possesses, though it lies hidden within them. It’s the ability to sense the energy of others and overpower your opponents, and everyone has it to some extent. The key is to never lose faith in yourself – that’s where true strength comes from. Let me show you. Haki generally manifests in two different forms, or ‘colors’.

Red lightning around a character indicates they are using Conqueror’s Haki. However, the anime hasn’t always shown this consistently, sometimes giving the effect to characters who don’t actually have Haki.

Bonney received red lightning effects, which led some viewers to mistakenly believe she possessed Conqueror’s Haki.

Bonney Does Not Have Conqueror’s Haki In The Manga

I’ve noticed that Bonney doesn’t seem to have Conqueror’s Haki, and honestly, it wouldn’t fit with her current age if she did. What is remarkable is that she already knows how to use Armament Haki – that’s pretty impressive for someone so young.

Conqueror’s Haki, sometimes called the Color of the Supreme King, is a powerful ability shared by many strong individuals. Unlike other Haki, you can’t directly train it to get stronger. It’s a reflection of the user’s own spirit and will grow in power as the user themselves becomes stronger. — Silvers Rayleigh explaining to Luffy

I’ve been watching Bonney closely, and I think she has the potential to awaken Conqueror’s Haki eventually, if she really pushes herself. However, the way the anime presented it – or at least seemed to present it – felt like a real error, almost like they were intentionally trying to mislead us.

One Piece Anime Is Great, But Fans Should Read The Manga Due To The Errors

The One Piece anime is consistently well-made and delivers exciting action, while also handling episodes with a lot of story or emotional depth effectively. However, it’s highly recommended that viewers read the One Piece manga first for the best experience.

The anime and manga versions of One Piece often contradict each other, and the anime frequently invents or changes events. Whether it’s altering the power levels in fights or misrepresenting key details about the world, the anime isn’t always accurate. To understand the story as it’s meant to be, it’s crucial to read the manga alongside the anime. For a complete and accurate One Piece experience, reading the manga is a must.

I’ve been following Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece for a while now, and it’s really exciting to see the story of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, nearing its end – we’re currently in the Final Saga! The newest chapter, 1169, is coming out this week in Weekly Shonen Jump on December 21, 2025. For those in Japan, it’ll be available at midnight on Monday. That translates to 11:00 AM Eastern Time or 8:00 AM Pacific Time for us in the States. The best part is you can read it for free on Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump app, which is a great way to support Oda and his work.
