This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
Summary
- Imu chooses members of the Gorosei based on their descent from families that united against the Great Kingdom. They must be capable fighters.
- Gorosei members are former God’s Knights with strong Devil Fruit abilities and likely use Conqueror’s Haki. They are on Yonko level.
- God’s Knights, like the Gorosei, have powerful abilities and are known for their strength. Imu must be a formidable force.
The Gorosei, often referred to as the Five Elders, are a group of five high-ranking individuals within the World Government, each holding significant positions. They follow the instructions of Imu, who assigns them various duties. These powerful figures carry out Imu’s orders promptly and efficiently, ensuring tasks are completed effectively.
Given the mystery surrounding Imu’s identity, it’s unlikely they would simply select any individuals for the position of Gorosei. This implies that Imu must have specific criteria or qualifications that potential candidates must fulfill before being elected. Although Oda hasn’t provided a detailed explanation yet, he has subtly hinted at the process through which the Gorosei are chosen in One Piece.
How Imu Chooses The Gorosei

To choose a member of the Gorosei, it’s essential that they belong to a family that joined forces against the Grand Kingdom in the past. Having connections to any of these former adversaries significantly reduces the likelihood of them turning against the World Government, making them more reliable candidates.
To join the ranks of the Gorosei, it is essential that one possesses exceptional combat skills. Since they are at least on par with Yonko-level fighters, some might argue they surpass this standard. A novice or weak fighter would struggle to protect Imu during times of crisis. Furthermore, an experienced warrior would find it easier to execute Imu’s commands. The Gorosei tend to be older individuals, suggesting that Imu prefers those who have accumulated both experience and trust over time.
The God’s Knights Are Promoted To The Position Of Gorosei
The Strongest Are Carefully Picked By Imu
Joining the God’s Knights would provide an individual with ample opportunities to build combat expertise and earn trust. Members of this group exhibit characteristics akin to the Gorosei, including regenerative abilities and the use of summoning circles. In the Egghead storyline, Jaygarcia Saturn leveraged a summoning circle to request reinforcements. Likewise, during the Elbaf saga, Shamrock invoked a similar mechanism to bring forth Killingham and Sommers.
One piece of evidence suggesting that the Gorosei were once part of the God’s Knights is their succession pattern, as seen when Figarland Garling replaced Saturn. Garling had served the Celestial Dragons for many years and was renowned as their champion. Over time, he rose through the ranks to become Supreme Commander. When Saturn failed to stop Vegapunk’s transmission, Imu apparently took his life and made Garling the new head of Science and Defense, which supports the idea that members of the God’s Knights are promoted and eventually become either Gorosei or Godheads.
How Strong Are The Gorosei And The God’s Knights?

- The Gorosei and the God’s Knights can regenerate
- They have overpowered abilities
Previously discussed, the Gorosei hold equal rank as the Yonko pirates, a claim backed by their impressive abilities. It’s plausible that they surpass the pirate crew members in strength. Equipped with Devil Fruit powers, the Gorosei possess the capability to tackle an entire fleet single-handedly. Moreover, all Gorosei likely master Conqueror’s Haki, demonstrating exceptional proficiency in its application. To keep the pattern consistent, it’s worth noting that Figarland Garling also wields Conqueror’s Haki. In a chaotic scene on Egghead Island, the Five Elders displayed such power.
You dare call me a human…? We are Gods!! —Gunko
In no contest did anyone manage to outsmart them, showcasing their exceptional abilities. It’s worth noting that their primary objective was to disrupt the broadcast rather than eliminating everyone on the island completely. Thus, it can be inferred that the situation would have escalated significantly if the Gorosei had solely targeted all life forms. Moreover, the Straw Hats might not have made it through if Eiichiro “Emet” OPM hadn’t utilized Joy Boy’s Haki to repel four members of the Gorosei.
The God’s Knights bear a striking resemblance to the Gorosei. As of now, the God’s Knights have caused destruction in Elbaf without receiving any harm themselves. Similar to the Gorosei, they possess powerful Devil Fruits and can regenerate, as well as summon others. Given their numerous powerful subordinates, one can only speculate about the immense power of Imu.
