One Piece Characters Who Fought Zoro And Should Have Won

Roronoa Zoro is a key member of Monkey D. Luffy’s crew. As a master swordsman, he acts as a protector, taking on any threats to Luffy’s goals or the safety of his fellow crew members.

Zoro is a unique fighter because he wields three swords, a style rarely seen. Despite its unusual nature, this approach has led to a lot of victories for him. Throughout the story, Zoro has faced numerous opponents and often comes out on top, even in fights where he was outmatched. Now, let’s look at the characters who arguably should have defeated Zoro.

This post contains spoilers for One Piece.

King

Affiliation: Beasts Pirates

  • Devil Fruit: Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Pteranodon
  • Haki: Armament and Observation

King was Kaido’s most trusted subordinate – Kaido being known as the strongest being alive – so fans expected a lot from him. Born with a powerful heritage, King possessed incredible strength and durability, making him extremely difficult to harm. He also ate the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Pteranodon, a Devil Fruit that let him transform into a Pteranodon, a type of flying dinosaur.

King was an incredibly difficult opponent, thanks to his unique Lunarian powers and Devil Fruit abilities. Zoro quickly discovered this during their fight and understood it wouldn’t be easy. For most of the battle, King dominated, and Zoro struggled to find a way to break through his defenses. It became obvious that Zoro wasn’t strong enough yet to win.

Oda needed Zoro to win, so he pushed King to try and finish the fight quickly. This gave Zoro the opening he needed, and he capitalized on it. If the fight had been more even, King, as an experienced fighter, could have won by making Zoro’s sword, Enma, exhaust his Haki. He should have realized stalling was the best strategy, but Oda prioritized Zoro’s victory above all else.

Rob Lucci

Affiliation: World Government, Cipher Pol

  • Devil Fruit: Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Leopard
  • Haki: Armament and Observation

Lucci and Zoro first crossed paths in Water 7, but their battle didn’t happen until the Egghead arc. Both fighters had become significantly more powerful since then, promising an incredible fight. Lucci had unlocked the full potential of his Devil Fruit, greatly increasing his strength, and he’d also become much more skilled with Haki.

The battle between Lucci and Zoro on Egghead Island was incredibly even. Both fighters were determined to win and fought with everything they had. Lucci used his Devil Fruit powers and Rokushiki techniques to pressure Zoro, but Zoro eventually gained the upper hand with the help of his sword, Enma.

Daz Bones

Affiliation: Baroque Works, Cross Guild

  • Devil Fruit: Supa Supa no Mi
  • Haki: None

Daz Bones, nicknamed Mr. 1, was fiercely loyal to Crocodile and always followed his commands. During the events in Alabasta, he battled Roronoa Zoro, determined to prevent the Straw Hat crew from advancing.

Zoro had a really tough fight against Daz Bones, whose Devil Fruit power let him create blades from any part of his body. Daz Bones, an assassin from Baroque Works, gave Zoro a lot of trouble. It seemed like Zoro was going to lose when Mr. 1 launched a strong attack that hit his chest. The attack was so powerful it completely sliced the pillar behind Zoro into pieces.

Normally, Zoro should have been instantly knocked out or seriously injured. Yet, he managed to overcome the challenge, even cutting through steel to defeat Daz Bones. While it makes sense Zoro survived – he’s a fictional hero in a shonen manga – his victory still feels surprising and unexpected.

Kaku

Affiliation: World Government, Cipher Pol

  • Devil Fruit: Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model: Giraffe
  • Haki: Armament and Observation

Kaku used to be a member of CP9, a powerful organization that served as a major enemy during the Enies Lobby storyline. His job, like the other CP9 agents, was to prevent the Straw Hat Pirates from rescuing Nico Robin, and he specifically fought against Roronoa Zoro to achieve this.

During the Water 7 arc, Kaku clearly had the upper hand against Zoro, and his abilities became even stronger after he ate a Devil Fruit. Despite being new to Devil Fruit powers, he quickly learned to use them effectively, cleverly utilizing his elongated body – similar to a giraffe – to boost his kicks. Combining this with his Rokushiki skills, Kaku dominated the fight, and it seemed certain he would win. Ultimately, Oda introduced Zoro’s Ashura form, allowing him to defeat Kaku, though many fans believe Kaku should have been the victor.
