As a historian and scholar of the high seas, I can’t help but marvel at the intricate web of animosity woven by one man – Gol D. Roger. His legendary status has cast long shadows over many lives, none more so than those who held power during his time.
Gol D. Roger completely changed the world of One Piece forever, because he found the titular treasure and announced it to everyone, becoming the Pirate King and kick-starting a golden age of piracy in the process. His influence can still be felt to this day, seeing as he has inspired an entire generation of young people to become pirates, including the protagonist of the series, Monkey D. Luffy.
Despite having numerous friends and supporters, Roger’s legendary standing wouldn’t have been achieved without incurring a significant number of enemies along the way. During his pirating days, several notable individuals developed an intense dislike for Gol D. Roger, and the following six characters are among those who detest him most fervently.
6 Shiki
One Of The Many Evil Pirates Who Were Brought Down By The Pirate King
In their prime, the notorious pirates known as “Golden Lion” Shiki and Gol D. Roger had an intriguing contrast in goals and a rivalry, with Shiki aiming to dominate the seas, while Roger strived for freedom for all. They frequently encountered each other and developed a grudging respect. However, everything shifted during the Battle of Edd War, when they met again.
As a loyal follower of Gol D. Roger, I can’t help but recount the events that led to my deep-seated animosity towards him. After spurning his offer of an alliance, the Golden Lion Pirates and their vast fleet were mercilessly annihilated by Roger and his crew. This devastating loss left me, Shiki, imprisoned within the walls of Impel Down, harboring a bitter resentment for the Pirate King that lingered for years.
5 Portgas D. Ace
Resented His Father, Even Though He Never Met Him
Sadly, one character harboring resentment towards Roger was none other than his own son, Portgas D. Ace. Despite being born after Roger’s execution, Ace’s blood tie with Roger complicated his life significantly. This was largely because many people who knew the Pirate King viewed him as a “devil” primarily due to his lineage.
Ace grew a lot of resentment against Roger for forcing him to exist in a world that wanted him dead. Because of this, he ended up rejecting his status as the son of the Pirate King and eventually saw Whitebeard as his true father, after joining his pirate crew. Sadly, Ace’s relationship with Roger was one of the reasons that the World Government decided to execute him after he was captured.
4 Kaido
Was Envious Of His Glorious Death
Similar to Shiki, Kaido was a member of the Rocks Pirates. Following their captain, Rocks D. Xebec’s defeat at the hands of Gol D. Roger and Garp, Kaido developed enmity towards Roger. After Roger claimed the title of Pirate King, this event significantly altered Kaido’s perspective on things, leading him to believe that Haki was superior to Devil Fruit abilities in combat.
What truly fueled Kaido’s animosity towards Roger was not just any ordinary thing, but rather his death. It was a death of great significance, transforming the world as it occurred during his execution. This was the kind of death Kaido had always aspired to, yet he never achieved it. His resentment and envy also drove him to seek the One Piece and join forces with Big Mom in pursuit of the title of Pirate King. However, these ambitions were shattered when he was defeated by Monkey D. Luffy.
3 Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom)
Hated Roger Until Her Final Moments
It appears that Charlotte Linlin, commonly known as Big Mom, didn’t develop the same level of respect for Gol D. Roger as some of her ex-crewmates from the Rocks Pirates did. This could be due to several factors such as her immature and competitive demeanor or the fact that he had previously taken the contents of her Road Poneglyph long ago.
She detested Roger so deeply that thoughts of him lingered even as she plummeted towards certain destruction – an intriguing fact which highlights the intensity of her disdain. Big Mom asserted that she despised Roger because he was the architect of a new golden age of piracy, an era that saw the rise of many ambitious and formidable pirates who ultimately outmatched her. It’s noteworthy to suggest that it was Roger’s final words that may have unwittingly contributed to her defeat.
2 Rocks D. Xebec
The Most Powerful Pirate Was Defeated By Roger And Garp
The enigmatic and elusive figure of Rocks D. Xebec, who once led the Pirates of the Rocks, remains veiled in secrecy, with little known about his character traits or connections with other characters at this time. Yet, it’s plausible to infer that he harbored intense hatred towards Gol D. Roger, as both Rocks and Monkey D. Garp were instrumental in his defeat, possibly even his demise.
The notorious Rocks Pirates were known as one of the most feared and perilous crews globally, earning their reputation under the leadership of Xebec, who was infamous for his cruelty. Given his ruthless nature, it’s clear that he harbored intense animosity towards Roger for defeating him and disbanding his crew, a sentiment intensified by the fact that the future Pirate King needed to form an alliance with a Marine to accomplish this feat.
1 The Five Elders & Imu
The Pirate King Changed Their Entire World, And It Greatly Angered Them
If there’s something that is a threat to oppressive governments, it’s legendary figures that can change all society in the blink of an eye. This is exactly what Gol D. Roger did to the World Government of One Piece, which led their main authorities, the Five Elders and Imu, to truly despise him more than anybody else. If finding the One Piece treasure – which they were trying to hide – wasn’t already enough, their decision to publicly execute Roger completely backfired.
Originally, they aimed to warn against piracy and discourage people from becoming pirates. However, the notoriety of the Pirate King and his last words paradoxically sparked an increase in piracy. Today, there are numerous pirate crews searching for the One Piece and uncovering secrets about the world that both the Five Elders and Imu have been concealing. This entire situation can be traced back to Gol D. Roger, and they will harbor resentment towards him until their rule comes to an end.
