One Piece: Characters Who Made Their Dreams a Reality!

Summary

  • Dreams are significant in the One Piece universe, with characters striving to achieve them despite conflicts.
  • Luffy lets enemies live as unfulfilled dreams are worse than death, while some characters achieve their dreams.
  • Examples include Hatchan’s takoyaki stand, Hiriluk’s cure, Cricket proving a golden city, and Baby 5 finding love.

In the universe of One Piece, dreams hold great importance. Each member of the Straw Hat Pirates has at least one dream, and many major characters’ dreams are thoroughly explored. Given the nature of this world, it’s inevitable that different dreams will clash, and not everyone may get to realize theirs.

Oda, the creator, has made it clear that Luffy allows his enemies to live because not being able to fulfill one’s dreams is worse than death in Luffy’s view. However, there are some characters who have clearly stated their dreams and managed to achieve at least one of them. These characters have realized at least one dream of theirs.

1. Hatchan

Dream: Open A Takoyaki Stand

  • Affiliation: Arlong Pirates (Formerly), Sun Pirates (Formerly)

I, over time, have been acquainted with a unique character named Hatchan, who was closely tied to Arlong throughout his notorious pirate career. This fellow fish-man was part of both the Arlong Pirates and later, the Sun Pirates, during Arlong’s tenure with the latter group. Interestingly, despite Arlong’s strong beliefs in human supremacy, Hatchan had built friendships with humans like Rayleigh and even formed bonds with Arlong’s adversaries, the Straw Hat Pirates, demonstrating a more inclusive outlook compared to his former captain.

In contrast to the grand aspirations of his past captains, who envisioned either global dominion by fish-men or improved coexistence between humans and fish-men, Hatchan harbored a more straightforward dream before his pirate days. Together with his comrade Kuroobi, he aspired to establish a Takoyaki stand. After assisting some carpentry-skilled catfish whose village was devastated by a sunken ship, Hatchan acquired a takoyaki stand using plundered treasures. He then utilized these materials to cook takoyaki for the catfish. As gratitude, they constructed his current operational base, the Takoyaki 8, in one night for him. Since then, Hatchan appears content to primarily work on the ship and reminisce about his pirate days. However, he seems open to helping friends in times of distress.

2. Dr. Hiriluk

Dream: Cure the Frozen Hearts of Drum Kingdom

  • Affiliation: Sakura Kingdom

Previously a thief afflicted by a terminal ailment, Hiriluk found solace and recovery in the sight of sakura, or cherry blossom trees. This encounter filled him with unending positivity and led to him falsely claiming medical expertise. With many other doctors captured by Wapol, he was one of only two left. However, his treatments were ineffective for patients’ physical health. Instead, Hiriluk aimed to heal their emotional pain, which he believed had been frozen by King Wapol’s self-centeredness.

Just before he passed away, Hiriluk uncovered a substance he had created through his experiments, which could tint snow like cherry blossoms – an achievement he was proud of. Before breathing his last, he expressed that his dream would endure beyond him. Following his death, Tony Tony Chopper, Hiriluk’s adopted son, was looked after by Kureha and educated in the art of medicine. Kureha retained her friend’s substance. After Wapol’s downfall and removal from power, Kureha scattered the substance into the heavens. It worked, and led to Dalton, Wapol’s former guard and new ruler, renaming the kingdom as the Sakura Kingdom, with the intention of using the name to signify renewal. Though pragmatism is essential for reaching any goal, it is the capacity to keep hope alive that fosters such endeavors. Although Hiriluk did not get to witness his dream come to fruition, his unwavering faith, even in death, served as an inspiring emblem to crucial figures involved in rebuilding the kingdom.

3. Mont Blanc Cricket

Dream: Prove the Golden City’s Existence

  • Affiliation: Saruyama Alliance, Unnamed Pirate Crew (Formerly)

Mont Blanc Cricket was a descendant of Mont Blanc Noland, a man who claimed to have discovered a city of gold in Jaya but was later executed due to its non-appearance, much to the king’s displeasure. Despite his noble intentions and valiant efforts, this one mistake tarnished his reputation and he became known as a liar in a notorious tale. The stigma of Noland’s supposed lie followed Cricket as well. He ventured out onto the open seas and even led a group of pirates for a time, believing that he was destined to find Jaya’s legendary city of gold. His fellow pirates eventually deserted him, leaving him alone. However, two pirates named Masira and Shoujou later joined Cricket, having been devotees of Noland’s fable and true believers in the existence of the city of gold. They saw themselves as Cricket’s spiritual offspring, forming a bond similar to that of brothers. This alliance eventually led to the creation of the Saruyama Alliance, an organization composed of three pirates with two separate crews – one captained by Masira and another by Shoujou.

The team managed to uncover evidence suggesting the city’s presence, finding gold artifacts in its vicinity, but they never truly possessed the city itself. Initially hostile towards them, the Saruyama Alliance eventually allied with the Straw Hats, who were on their way to Sky Island, where the golden city was ultimately located. Upon Luffy striking the golden bell of Shandora, Cricket finally uncovered the truth that had been shrouded in mystery for so long, and he subsequently resumed his travels with the brothers, chasing after a new aspiration.

4. Baby 5

Dream: Marriage

  • Affiliation: Straw Hat Grand Fleet, Donquixote Pirates (Formerly)

Originally shunned as an unwanted child in the poor Kuen Village, Baby 5 was seen as a burden due to her inability to work at such a young age. Abandoned on the mountains by her mother, she grew up feeling misunderstood and obligated to obey others. However, the Donquixote Pirates took her in when they realized she wasn’t useless at just eight years old. Despite this, Baby 5 continued to grapple with internal trauma. People, including several suitors, often exploited her kindness, proposing marriage which she quickly accepted. Unfortunately, each suitor was later killed by Donquixote Doflamingo, and their villages were raided. Though Doflamingo generally cares for his crewmates, some argue that he manipulates Baby 5 to maintain control over her rather than genuinely protect her from her suitors’ true intentions. Despite this, Baby 5 harbored a deep longing for marriage, seeing each proposal as genuine love, and needed to be dissuaded by her crewmates.

In the future, the man who ends up marrying Baby 5 is part of the same group responsible for capturing Doflamingo. Sai, a sailor from the Happo Navy, made advances towards Baby 5 that she perceived as romantic. When it was revealed that Sai had a strong desire for validation, he vowed to make her his wife. However, this plan was opposed by Lao G, one of Baby 5’s crew members, who also sought to control her. After overpowering Lao G, Sai faced challenges from his own grandfather, Chinjao, and the head of the navy, as they disapproved of their union due to Sai’s prior engagement to Uholisia, heiress to the Niho Navy. Despite this, after Sai managed to convince his grandfather, he was granted the position of don. Sai then officially became engaged to Baby 5, and together they formed an alliance between the Happo Navy and another group called the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, which serves Monkey D. Luffy.

After one unfortunate cancellation of their wedding (interestingly enough, given Uholisia’s bigamous past), Sai and Baby 5 got married. Besides being a valuable crew member, Baby 5’s cooking happens to be Sai’s favorite. Though her abilities were not initially obvious, it is now evident that Baby 5 is anything but useless.

5. A Handful Of Baroque Works Officer Agents

Dream: To Attain Their Dream Occupation

  • Affiliation: New Spiders Cafe, Baroque Works (Formerly)

The criminal group Baroque Works aimed to dethrone Alabasta’s current ruler and put Crocodile on the throne instead. In return for their loyalty, top-tier members would receive a share of power. Fortunately, thanks to Mr. 2 Bon Clay’s actions, most members have been released. Once they were assured of their freedom, Miss Goldenweek (also known as Marianne) used a color transformation trick, turning each member into their desired profession or persona. For example, Babe transformed into a pizza delivery guy, Mikita became a chocolatier, and Zala disguised herself once more as Paula, the proprietor of Spiders Cafe. Interestingly, a few members’ dreams involved the food service industry.

Among other aspirations, Drophy (Miss Merry Christmas) desires to become a princess, Gem (Mr. 5) aspires to be a fireman, and Lassoo (Mr. 4’s dog-gun) aims to transform into a tank. The dreams of Crocodile and Daz Bonez (Mr.1) have also been revealed: Bonez yearns to become a superhero, possibly referring to his Supa Supa no Mi, while Crocodile seeks to rule as the King of Pirates, which aligns with his disenchantment towards dreams and piracy in the current era. The dreams of Bentham and Galdino (Mr. 3) remain unknown since they were not present at this time.

To realize her dream, Zala relaunched Spiders Cafe at a different spot, and all those who opted to leave earlier are now part of its staff. Although dreams like becoming a princess or a firefighter may not align perfectly with the requirements of a restaurant, roles such as a delivery person, artist, or chocolatier can surprisingly be fulfilled in this setting. In their last feature story, the members of Baroque Works appear to be happy with their lives at the cafe, with several of them following paths that reflect their dreams directly.
