One Piece: Chopper Needs a New Scary Form

Key Takeaways

  • Pre-time skip Chopper was a monstrous beast
  • Chopper’s scary forms added depth to his character growth
  • A new monstrous form could offset Chopper’s cuteness

As a long-time fan of One Piece, I’ve watched Chopper evolve from a monstrous beast to the adorable mascot we know and love today. However, as much as I enjoy his cute antics, there’s something missing in his character development since the time skip.

In the opening scenes of “One Piece“, Chopper is not just the team doctor; he’s also the one who adds a touch of cuteness to the story. With his petite size and endearing, somewhat innocent demeanor, Chopper has won over both the audience and the show’s characters with his innocent curiosity and sweet tooth. Even the Straw Hat crew, who know Chopper best, often treat him like a cherished little brother.

Initially, Chopper from “One Piece” wasn’t just known for his cute appearance. When he first appeared, he didn’t always look adorable. Instead, he often transformed into an unnerving beast during battles. However, even in his most fearsome forms, Chopper has undergone a makeover that makes him endearingly cute in the current series. This transformation adds depth to Chopper’s character development. Introducing a new terrifying form for Chopper could further enrich this character who seems to have been missing some edge lately.

Pre-time Skip Chopper Was a Monstrous Beast

Monster Point Was Terrifying

From the start of his tale, Chopper, a reindeer-man hybrid, has consistently grappled with his physical appearance. He frequently sees himself as a grotesque creature, which makes him one of the most melancholic characters in One Piece. His alienation from both reindeers and humans has left him feeling isolated, fostering within him a disdain for humanity. However, destiny would lead him to encounter the Straw Hat Pirates, providing him with a sense of belonging and allowing him to step out of his comfort zone during the Drum Island Arc, embarking on an adventure aimed at discovering a remedy for every illness in One Piece.

Before joining the Straw Hat crew in One Piece, Chopper regarded his hybrid forms from the Human-Human Fruit as utterly terrifying. Due to this, humans often mistook him for a monster and shot him. However, after Luffy discovered Chopper, instead of viewing him as a monster, he found each transformation fascinating and suitable for combat. Since then, Chopper has embraced his monstrous forms, accepting himself completely.

I am a brash… monster!

This concept reaches its peak when Chopper unleashes his Monster Point during the Enies Lobby Arc of One Piece. After eating too many Rumble Balls, Chopper loses self-control, transforming into a massive and fearsome creature. He attacks both friends and enemies without discrimination, emitting a chilling roar. Unleashing his Monster Point seems like the character giving in to his monstrous nature.

Post-Time Skip Chopper is Too Cute For His Own Good

From Monster to Mascot

Since the time skip, it seems that Chopper’s character depth has diminished. Now, with his transformations being cute and well-managed, viewers are left yearning for his monstrous aspect. It appears that Chopper is becoming more of a single-dimensional character compared to the complex beast he once was. This is particularly noticeable in relation to Chopper’s Human-Human Fruit’s Monster Point, which he now has full command over.

Zoro notes on Fishman Island that Chopper’s strongest aspect has become even more beastly than before, but he typically prefers to employ his adorable Kung Fu technique over this monstrous form. The recent cute transformations are the result of Chopper’s research and growing ease with his monster side, yet they diminish some complexity in the character that was present prior to One Piece‘s time skip. However, there is still an opportunity to restore Chopper’s character depth by introducing a new form which could be beneficial for him.

A New Monstrous Form Could Offset Chopper’s Cuteness in One Piece

A Form to Surpass Monster Point

Instead of making One Piece’s dearest crew member slip back into his initial despair, introducing a new fearsome, monstrous form for Chopper to use could address several issues the character has. Primarily, this new form would replace Monster Point as the one that unleashes his beastly side, offering Straw Hat’s doctor a risky yet beneficial transformation. Moreover, it would provide the character with an overdue power boost. While Monster Point is already exceptionally powerful, having another ability at his disposal, perhaps something similar to the Sulong Form of the Minx, would be a smart decision.

If I can help my crew, I want to become a real monster!

From the get-go, ever since One Piece’s time skip, it’s been like I’ve been missing out on some character growth, you know? It’s not that I’m complaining about being adorable, but there was a depth to my character before that seems to have been lost. Here’s hoping, as we approach the series finale, I can show more than just being the crew’s doc and pet.
