Key Takeaways
- Sanji’s hidden Germa genetic modifications awakened during the battle with Queen, aiding in his victory.
- Sanji’s initial reluctance to use the Raid Suit was overcome by necessity, showcasing his power.
- Without the dormant Germa tech within him, Sanji would have struggled against Queen’s advanced technology.
As a long-time fan of One Piece, I have to say that watching Sanji’s growth throughout the series has been nothing short of spectacular. His journey from a pampered chef to a battle-hardened warrior has been an emotional rollercoaster, filled with highs and lows, triumphs and tribulations.
It’s clear that Sanji, the unconventional cook of the Straw Hat pirates from One Piece, proves to be a remarkably powerful ally despite his profession as a chef. Although he’s more than capable of standing his ground against adversaries, being one of the three strongest crew members, Sanji didn’t perform exceptionally well during the fight with Queen in the Wano arc.
In the confrontation with Queen, it was evident that Sanji was battling a colossal user of the technologically advanced Dragon-Dragon Fruit. Interestingly, he chose not to don his Raid Suit, but instead, he activated his previously inactive Germa genetic enhancements, ultimately emerging victorious from the fight. Could Sanji have defeated Queen without these latent Germa abilities that reside within him?

As a gamer, I’ve always admired Black Leg Sanji, the culinary maestro among the Straw Hat pirates. It was initially thought that every facet of Sanji had been uncovered, but during our journey on Zou, a shocking revelation came to light – Sanji is none other than the third-born of the illustrious Vinsmoke family! This royal dynasty hails from the technologically advanced Germa Kingdom, renowned for its scientific prowess.
Sanji and four other siblings were born using genetic engineering, made possible by their father, Judge Vinsmoke’s scientific advancements. This genetic tinkering granted them traits such as human exoskeletons, rapid healing capabilities, and enhanced physical power. Regrettably, Sanji was seen as a disappointment within the family because he didn’t manifest these modifications. As a result, he faced rejection from his kin and endured bullying by his brothers.
Instead of focusing on power and might, Sanji’s feelings of compassion outweighed those of his siblings. On their journey to East Blue, it was his elder sister, Reiju, who aided him in escaping from a prison. Later, Sanji met Zeff and embarked on his dream to be a chef, working at the Baratie under his guidance.
After the time skip and his intense training in the Kamabakka Kingdom, Sanji’s genetically modified abilities never surfaced, despite him growing incredibly powerful within the Straw Hat Pirates. In his battle against Queen on Onigashima, it was evident that he faced significant challenges due to Queen’s technologically superior cyborg body.
The Reason Sanji Won the Battle Against Queen
Thanks to the Genetic Modification That Awakened, Sanji Could Defeat Queen
There are a few reasons why Sanji won the battle against Queen during the Raid on Onigashima, and it has plenty to do with his actions well before the battle. During the Levely arc, Sanji received his Raid Suit from Niji, his older brother, while escaping Cacao Island. Knowing Sanji would not accept anything from the family, Niji snuck it into Sanji’s pocket for future use.
Demonstrating Niji’s argument, initially Sanji showed no interest in Germa technology and wanted to discard the canister immediately. Yet, his actions were hindered by Luffy and Chopper, who were thrilled at the idea of seeing Sanji fire laser beams in Chapter 903. However, it wasn’t until the Wano arc that Sanji started employing the Raid Suit, with its usage only lasting for a total of three instances.
- Sanji first uses his Raid Suit in Chapter 931, when he takes the alias O-Soba Mask to defeat Page One.
- Sanji uses the Raid Suit a second time in Chapter 936 in the Flower Capital’s Bath House while peeping on Nami and Robin.
- Sanji uses his Raid Suit one final time to save Momonosuke from King in Chapter 988.
After repeated use of the Raid Suit, Sanji started to find himself experiencing some strange bodily sensations. Throughout this period, Sanji found it difficult to land a decisive blow against Queen in their fight. During the same time, Sanji grew increasingly desperate for Zoro to awaken from his coma and lend aid in the battle. It’s evident now that Sanji was unable to defeat Queen without either Germa technology or his Raid Suit by his side.
Probably because I wore this, the “science” that was in my body from birth awakened.
Despite being severely injured by Queen’s Brachiosnakeus attack, breaking bones that would have sidelined an ordinary person, ending the fight, Sanji miraculously managed to activate his innate genetic modifications. This was due to his frequent use of his Raid Suit throughout battles, which in turn led to the emergence of his body’s hidden modifications. These included a human exoskeleton, rapid healing abilities, and enhanced physical strength.
In the absence of Sanji activating this upgrade, it’s possible he wouldn’t have been able to overpower Queen without a considerable edge. Prior to Queen’s defeat in Episode 1061, Queen consistently demonstrated potent abilities and attacks, even mirroring Germa 66’s techniques against Sanji, which underscored his reliance on his cyborg enhancements.
Without the suit, you’re no match for me!
Despite damaging his Raid Suit in combat, Sanji refused to surrender his emotions and transform into his chilly siblings’ likeness. Yet, unaware to him, some of the Germa enhancements hidden within him stirred to life. Though he might not have fully activated the science inside him, these latent abilities proved useful during his confrontation with the Queen.
Although Sanji felt uneasy about transforming into a quasi-brother figure, the enhancements to his physique enabled him to execute more powerful moves capable of overpowering Queen.
After Sanji gained a tougher exoskeleton, increased strength, and extraordinary speed combined with his Armament Haki, he managed to deliver several powerful hits on Queen, sending him flying from Onigashima. While Sanji emerged victorious in this fight, he immediately collapsed, implying that without the extra enhancements from Germa, Sanji might have found it challenging to battle against the technologically superior Queen.
